Tigers Split Doubleheader at Cornell
April 29, 2007 | Baseball
ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Princeton baseball team split a doubleheader on Sunday at Cornell, winning the opening game 7-5, but falling 5-4 in 12 innings in the nightcap. The loss eliminates Princeton from Gehrig Division contention. Princeton needed to sweep Cornell this weekend to tie Penn for the Gehrig crown, but won three of the four games.
Game 1
For the third-straight game against Cornell, Princeton jumped out to a first-inning lead as the Tigers plated a pair of runs in the opening inning as Princeton registered four hits.
Freshman Greg Van Horn led off with a single to shallow center, and was followed by senior Aaron Prince's bunt single. Senior Sal Iacono then singled to the hole between third base and shortstop to fill the bases with no outs. Van Horn was then able to score when freshman Jack Murphy grounded into a double play, and Iacono came home on a double to right off the bat of junior Spencer Lucian. Princeton extended its lead in the second inning to 3-0 when freshman Brian Berkowitz hit a solo homer down the left field line.
Cornell got two of this runs back in their half of the second inning when Domenic DiRicco hit a two-run double over the head of Tiger sophomore shortstop Dan DeGeorge and into the gap in left center.
Princeton added a pair of insurance runs in both the fifth and seventh innings before Cornell scored three in the bottom of the seventh to close the final gap.
In the fifth, Van Horn and Prince reached as Van Horn was hit by a pitch and Prince singled. That put two on for Murphy, who doubled to left field to plate the two runners. Two runs later the Tigers plated two additional runs as Prince and Iacono scored on groundouts.
Princeton freshman David Hale earned the complete game win as he allowed five runs on six hits in seven innings. He walked three and struck out five. The loss went to Jim Hyland.
Game 2
Cornell scored a run in the bottom of the 12th innings to win the nightcap 5-4 at Hoy Field. The game was deadlocked at 4-4 from the fifth inning on and was won on Ry Kagan's single.
Princeton jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Van Horn hit a three-run homer to left field. DeGeorge walked and sophomore Derek Beckman singled to put two on for Van Horn, whose homer was his fourth of the season.
Cornell answered back with three runs in the bottom of the third to even the score. Following a leadoff walk, Adam Jacobs scored when DiRicco doubled down the right field line. DiRicco then scored Cornell's second run on Justin Milo's single. Milo scored the equalizer a batter later on Scott Hardinger's single.
The game remained tied at 3-3 until the top of the fifth when Iacono changed that with one swing as he hit a solo homer to left center field. The home run was his fifth of the season. The Princeton lead only lasted until the bottom of the inning when Milo hit a homer to center field, just to the right side of the batters eye, knotting the game at 4-4.
Princeton threatened in the top of the ninth as the Tigers loaded the bases with no outs. Van Horn hit a leadoff double over the third base bag. Prince was then hit by a pitch and Iacono singled to shallow right to fill up the bases. Cornell reliever Blake Hamilton recovered from that and was able to get the next three batters out without allowing a run to cross the plate and sent the game to the bottom of the ninth tied. Senior starter Eric Walz worked around a one-out single in the bottom of the ninth as the game went to extra innings.
The game remained tied at 4-4 until the 12th inning when Cornell was able to push across the winning run. A single, double and intentional walk loaded the bases, and the game-winning run scored on Ry Kagan's single to right center field.
Walz went 11.1 innings for the Tigers and allowed five runs on 14 hits. The senior struck out five and fell to 3-1. Blake Hamilton won the game in relief.
