The Princeton track teams returned to the United States Sunday after a rewarding 12-day stay in China, completing their trip with an invitational meet at the Shanghai Sports Institute during the day Saturday.
Highlights of Saturday's meet, which saw the Tigers compete against many of the top athletes from the Shanghai area, were three event winners on both the women's and men's sides.
Chad Faulkner's personal best of 5.00 meters (16 feet, 5 inches) won the pole vault on the men's side, and that mark was good enough to defeat the national champion and indoor pole vault record holder from the Chinese contingent. Other winners for the men included Heps and IC4A champion Justin Frick's high jump of 6 feet, 11 inches and a 21.54 in the 200 meters by Shafiq Kashmiri.
On the women's side, Catha Mullen won the 1,500-meter race, while Heather Iatauro gave the Tigers two winners on the track with a victory in the 800 meters. In the field events, Jess Kloss was the event winner in the pole vault.
On Friday night, the 70-member Princeton contingent spent the evening at the Shanghai Racquet Club (see above photo), where they were graciously hosted by alumni Bruce Robertson '65 and Carol Wingard '83.
The Princeton group of student-athletes, coaches and administrators arrived in Beijing June 13 and spent five days in the Chinese capital, exploring the city in addition to participating in a meet June 16 with athletes from two Beijing universities.
From there, the team traveled to Xian, the ancient capital of China, for a two-day stay before heading to Shanghai last Wednesday.
