The two-time defending Ivy League Champion Princeton field hockey team kicks off the 2007 season on Sunday afternoon at American. Princeton took a tight 1-0 game from the Eagles a season ago and with both teams ranked in the preseason top 20, another tight game is expected on Sunday.
The Tigers received the 18th spot in the NFHCA's preseason poll, while American was slotted in two spots ahead at 16th. Both teams were NCAA tournament participants last year as American was the Patriot League's champion and Princeton the Ivy League's. American fell in the opening round to Wake Forest 5-0, while the Tigers upended Old Dominion 3-2 in overtime in the first round before falling to Connecticut in the second round.
While Sunday's game marks Princeton's opener, American will have played three times by then. The Eagles opened the season a week ago by taking the tournament title at Richmond's Spider Invitational. American opened with a 5-1 win over Radford, then topped the host Spiders 4-0. AU recorded its second-consecutive shutout on Friday night, blanking Virginia Commonwealth, an opponent of Princeton later this season, 1-0.
Princeton returns its five leading scorers from last season, led by senior Paige Schmidt, the two-time reigning Ivy League Player of the Year. She had 18 points a season ago and is one of five returning players that reached double digits in points last season, along with junior Holly McGarvie (20), junior Katie Kinzer (16), sophomore Tina Bortz (14) and junior Sarah Reinprecht (14). The Princeton roster also boasts that last two Ivy League Rookie of the Years as Reinprecht took the honor in 2005 and sophomore Kaitlyn Perrelle won it last year.
Princeton and American have met seven times with Princeton winning six meetings. The Tigers won the first five before American won the season opener of the 2005 season 4-1 at home. Last year, the teams met later in the season and Kinzer's deflection goal in the 44th minute proved to be the decider in a 1-0 Tiger win. Junior Leah Hoagland assisted on the goal.
After Sunday's game, the Tigers return to action on Wednesday night for their home opener against seventh-ranked Penn State at 6 p.m. The Ivy season begins on Sept. 8 when Yale visits Class of '52 Stadium.
