WASHINGTON, D.C. -- American's Denise Infante converted on a scramble in front of the Tiger goal to break a 2-2 tie with less than a minute left in regulation time as the 18th-ranked Princeton field hockey team was edged by 16th-ranked American 3-2 on Sunday afternoon. Junior Katie Kinzer and sophomore Tina Bortz scored for Princeton in the game.
Princeton, which falls to 0-1 on the season after its opening day loss, led twice in the game, holding a 1-0 and 2-1 edge during the opening period. Bortz converted a pass from classmate Kaitlyn Perrelle at 13:04 to open the scoring and give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. Perrelle's pass came to Bortz in the circle, where she stopped the ball before shooting.
The Eagles came back to knot the score at 1-1 less than five minutes later on a goal from Christine Fingerhuth, but Princeton closed out the opening half's scoring two minutes later when Kinzer scored at 19:54 off an assist from classmate Leah Hoagland.
The Tigers held the lead going into the half, but American drew even once again in the 49th minute on a goal from Savannah Graybill. From there the game remained deadlocked and appeared headed to overtime before Infante scored the deciding goal with 39 seconds left on the clock.
Princeton sophomore goalkeeper Cynthia Wray, making her first collegiate start, made three saves in the game, while Alyssa Poorman made two saves for American.
The Tigers are back in action on Wednesday night when seventh-ranked Penn State visits Class of '52 Stadium for a 6 p.m. start.
