Women's Soccer Closes Pre-Ivy Slate with 3-0 Win over Sacred Heart
September 26, 2007 | Women's Soccer
PRINCETON -- Let the Ivy League season begin.
Wednesday night on Powers Field at Princeton Stadium, the Tiger women's soccer team shut out Sacred Heart 3-0 to post back-to-back wins heading into the Ivy League season, which begins Saturday at Dartmouth.
"It was a good win going into the league," Princeton head coach Julie Shackford said. "We got a lot of people playing time and we haven't given up anything at home."
En route to the confidence-building victory, Princeton got three goals from three of its newer threats on offense. With her third goal on the season, which she knocked in off a Sarah Peteraf crossbar less than three minutes into the game, junior Jen Om climbed to the top of Princeton's scoring chart on the young campaign. Om had one goal through her first two seasons and has scored all three this year in a span of two weeks.
Libby van Beuren, a promising freshman, added her name to the all-time scorers' list by scoring a loose ball in front of the net in the 52nd minute to double Princeton's lead. Sophomore Marci Pasenello had her first goal of the season when she redirected a long-distance shot from the left side by Melissa Whitley in the 77th minute.
"Even though we haven't played our best games the last two times out, we pushed through and got some shots in the back of the net," sophomore Vicki Anagnostopoulos said.
At the other end of the field, Maren Dale played 80-plus minutes before giving way so freshman Alyssa Pont could make her collegiate debut. Dale was a wall between the posts once again, helping to extend Princeton's home scoreless streak on the season to a perfect 290 minutes.
Princeton outshot Sacred Heart 19-6, and though the corner kicks were only a 7-5 Tiger advantage, the Pioneers did not get one in the second half while Princeton had five.
The Tigers climbed to 2-4-1 with the win after starting the season playing five straight teams ranked or receiving votes in national polls at the time of the game. During the span, Princeton never saw more than a two-goal difference in the outcome. Sacred Heart dropped to 0-8-1.
"We've played well even in our defeats, but a win is always nice," Shackford said.
Princeton's game Saturday at Dartmouth will kick at 7 p.m.
