September 05, 2007 | Field Hockey
PRINCETON -- No. 6 Penn State scored twice early to take a 2-0 lead and defeated the Princeton field hockey team 5-1 on Wednesday night at Class of '52 Stadium. Junior Holly McGarvie brought Princeton within a goal in the 17th minute, but Penn State pulled away late for the win.
Princeton outpaced Penn State in shots and corners, taking 17 shots to Penn State's 13 and having five corners to Penn State's three. Penn State, however, did a better job taking advantage of their chances to pull out the win.
After each team had a few early chances, Penn State's Allison Scola put her team on the scoreboard at 9:50 when she found the ball alone on the back post and shoved it over line. Four minutes later Brittney Long scored her first of two goals when she redirected a crossing pass that bounced off a Tiger stick in front of the goal.
Princeton cut the lead in half less than three minutes later when McGarvie scored her first goal of the season off the rush. Junior Leah Hoagland ran into the Penn State circle and fed a pass to McGarvie, who placed the ball inside the far post for the goal. The assist was the second of the year for Hoagland.
The score remained tight for much of the remainder of play, with Penn State holding a 2-1 edge until the Nittany Lions made it a 3-1 game in the 51st minute on Long's second goal when she scored on a break. Penn State made it 5-1 with a pair of goals in the game's final 10 minutes. Shaun Banta and Natalie Blasco had the goals.
Princeton sophomore goalkeeper Cynthia Wray made five saves while Penn State's Jen Beaumont had eight.
