Princeton Splits Pair at SoCal Tournament

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The 15th-ranked Princeton men's water polo team split two games on Saturday at the SoCal Tournament at Loyola Marymount. Princeton dropped its opening game to third-ranked Stanford 12-4 but rebounded with a 12-10 win over 11th-ranked Pacific. Sophomore Jeff Cole scored seven goals on Saturday.
Princeton opened the tournament, which featured 14 ranked teams and included the schools ranked one through first through 11th in the latest poll. A day after facing USC, the nation's top-ranked team, the Tigers drew another top team in Stanford in the tournament opener.
For the second time this season, Stanford proved too strong for Princeton and defeated the Tigers 12-4. Cole, sophomore Tommy Parolin, junior Douglas Wigley and freshman Tommy Donahue scored for the Tigers and junior Scott Hvidt made 12 saves in goal.

Princeton then faced Pacific in the day's second game. The Tigers started strong and stayed ahead of Pacific most of the way, leading by as many as five in the third quarter before Pacific closed the final margin to two goals in the 12-10 Princeton win.
Cole led all scorers with six goals, while Wigley added three for the Tigers. Juniors Gregor Horstmeyer, Eric Vreeland and Mark Zalewski each added single goal in the win, while sophomore goalkeeper Mike Merlong made 11 saves for the win.

The day's results moved Princeton's record to 7-6 this season. Princeton will now play for 9th-12th place tomorrow in the tournament, beginning with a 10:40 a.m. game against seventh-ranked Long Beach State. The Tigers will then meet either eighth-ranked UC Irvine or 16th-ranked Redlands in the final game.
