Second-Ranked Maryland Blanks Princeton in Field Hockey
October 14, 2008 | Field Hockey
PRINCETON -- Nicole Muracco scored four times to lead second-ranked Maryland to a 5-0 win over the 12th-ranked Princeton field hockey team on Tuesday night at Class of '52 Stadium. The loss dropped the Tigers to 9-2 this season.
Maryland got off to a quick start when Muracco scored her 11th goal of the season six minutes into the game. The goal came off the rebound of a Susie Rowe shot and bounced to Muracco alone on the right side. The Terps then extended the lead to 2-0 later in the opening half when Ellen Ott scored her third goal of the year on a shot from the circle after Emma Thomas fed her a pass off a penalty corner.
Maryland outshot Princeton 13-7 in the opening half and had seven corners to Princeton's two. Those numbers reversed themselves in the second half as Princeton put heavy pressure on the Maryland cage for much of the second half but were unable to crack the Maryland goal.
Princeton outshot Maryland 12-6 in the second half, with seven of those shots on goal, but was unable to put a score on the board. Instead it was Maryland that added to its lead scoring three times on fast breaks from its defensive end. Muracco scored on a breakaway in the 53rd minute, then added two goals in a 1:28 span in the 65th and 67th minutes, both of which were assisted by Katie O'Donnell.
Maryland goalkeeper Alicia Grater made nine saves, including seven in the second half to blank the Tigers, while junior Cynthia Wray stopped five shots for the Tigers. Additionally, senior tri-captain Candice Arner made two defensive saves.
Princeton and Maryland each finished the game with 19 shots, while Maryland held a 10-9 edge in shots on goal. Maryland also held an 8-7 edge in penalty corners. Senior Kraftin Schreyer and junior Christina Bortz paced the Tigers with four shots each.
The loss drops the Tigers to 9-2 overall this season and snaps a six-game Tiger winning streak, while Maryland improved to 12-2 with the win. Princeton returns to action this Saturday at 12 noon when it hosts Brown in an Ivy League contest at Class of '52 Stadium.
