Peteraf's Golden Goal Gives Women's Soccer Ivy Lead
October 18, 2008 | Women's Soccer
Peteraf scored her sixth game-winning goal of the season in the 107th minute of Saturday evening's 2-1 win over Columbia, putting Princeton alone in first place in the Ivy League.
Princeton (9-1-2, 3-0-1 Ivy) won't have long to enjoy its new alone-at-the-top status, as Harvard, which was a 3-0 winner at Brown Saturday, will visit Roberts Stadium just one standings point behind the Tigers.
The win extends Princeton's unbeaten streak to 10 games, though another impressive run came to an end.
Columbia scored in the 13th minute to put a stop to Princeton's shutout streak at 702 minutes and tie the game. That came less than 10 minutes after an unfortunate bounce for the Lions put Princeton ahead. Lisa Chinn's serve into the box just 5:35 into the game found a Columbia head and then the back of the net.
The game stayed tied and mostly even on the field until the minutes began to draw short in the second overtime. With three minutes to play, rookie Barb Previ passed across the top of the box to Peteraf, who maneuvered around a defender and buried the game-winner.
After Peteraf's second golden goal of the season, Princeton head coach Julie Shackford spotlighted the contribution of Previ, a rookie who hadn't played in the game before entering to start the second overtime on a chilly night.
“Give Barb Previ credit,” Shackford said. “She came in without having played the whole game and got the assist. It was a good team effort. Columbia is a good team and Aly (Pont) came up with some big saves.”
Pont, who entered the week ranked sixth in Division I in goals-against average and fourth in save-percentage, made five saves. Princeton outshot Columbia for the game 15-12.
