Early Goals Help Harvard Overtake Women's Soccer for Ivy Lead
October 25, 2008 | Women's Soccer
PRINCETON -- Thanks to a couple early Harvard goals in a downpour Saturday night on Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium, the Ivy League race got much tighter for the Princeton women's soccer team.
Saturday night at Roberts Stadium, Harvard scored twice in the first 10 minutes and Princeton never recovered, giving the Crimson first place in the Ivy League with a 2-1 win.
The win gives Harvard 12 points in the Ivy race, while Princeton and Columbia are tied with 10. Each team has two Ivy games left before the regular season concludes Nov. 8.
Kelli Okuji took a crossing pass from Katherine Sheeleigh in front of the net and knocked it home just 22 seconds into the game. Eight minutes later, Sheeleigh's free kick skidded through the box and into the net, and the Crimson were ahead 2-0.
Princeton looked to regain momentum when Sarah Peteraf's shot from the top corner of the box found the net with 49 seconds left before halftime, but the Tigers never found the equalizer.
Play was stopped with 30 minutes left due to a lightning delay that ended up lasting 70 minutes before the game was restarted and Harvard finished off the win.
Princeton will return to Roberts Stadium Wednesday night for its final non-league game of the regular season against Bucknell at 7 p.m. The Tigers will take to the road for their next Ivy League contest next Saturday night at Cornell.
