Field Hockey Edges Villanova 4-3 in Overtime
October 19, 2008 | Field Hockey
PRINCETON -- Freshman Katie Reinprecht scored five minutes into overtime to lift the 12th-ranked Princeton field hockey team to a 4-3 win against Villanova on Sunday afternoon at Class of '52 Stadium. Reinprecht and senior Candice Arner each had a goal and an assist in the win.
Princeton controlled play for much of the early action and broke through to take 1-0 lead in the 20th minute when Arner scored her fifth goal of the season. Reinprecht carried the ball into the circle and sent a pass across that Arner redirected up into the net to put Princeton ahead.
The goal started a three-minute span in which three goals were scored. Villanova quickly countered and Lauren Wuzzardo evened the score when she put home her fifth goal of the year on a direct corner. Princeton quickly answered though, and junior Kaitlyn Perrelle scored in the 23rd minute to regain the lead for the Tigers. After inserting the ball, Perrelle went to the near post where she directed an Arner pass into the open cage for her second goal of the season.
Play settled following the goal and the teams went to halftime with Princeton holding the 2-1 lead. That lead held until a flurry of goals in the final six minutes of the game. First Villanova tied the game at 2-2 when Meg Ryan scored on a backhanded shot from the left side.
Princeton freshman Allison Behringer answered less than two minutes later with her first collegiate goal as she lifted the rebound of a shot from freshman Kathleen Sharkey into the Wildcat goal. The lead last exactly two minutes before Villanova's Abby Sordoni scored on a 2-on-1 with 1:39 remaining after a pass across from Jennifer Nazarethian.
Neither team scored in the closing minute and the teams played almost five minutes of overtime before the Tigers scored the game winner at 74:57. Reinprecht played the ball in on a corner and hung near the post until her sister, senior Sarah Reinprecht played it back to her. Katie Reinprecht shot quickly for her team-leading 11th goal of the year to lift Princeton to the win.
Princeton outshot Villanova 31-4 and had 18 corners to Villanova's one. Wildcats goalkeeper Maura McCormick made 10 saves in the Villanova goal.
The win moved the Tigers to 11-2 overall and was Princeton's second-straight triumph. Villanova fell to 11-5 with the loss. Princeton returns to action next Saturday at 12 noon when it hosts Harvard.
