Princeton Blanks Cornell to Clinch Ivy Field Hockey Title
November 01, 2008 | Field Hockey
ITHACA, N.Y. -- The 11th-ranked Princeton field hockey team clinched at least a share of the Ivy League title and the league's spot in an NCAA tournament play-in game with a 4-0 shutout win at Cornell on Saturday afternoon. The win moved Princeton to a perfect 6-0 in league play this season.
Princeton opened the scoring in the 13th minute of the game when senior Kraftin Schreyer scored her eighth goal of the season on a penalty corner. The goal, which proved to be the game winner, was Schreyer's fourth deciding goal of the season. Princeton extended its lead to 2-0 later in the half when senior Katie Kinzer scored in the 21st minute off a feed from freshman Kathleen Sharkey. Kinzer's goal was her fifth of the year.
A year ago, the Tigers led Cornell 2-0 at the half only to have the Big Red rally for a 4-3 win, handing the Tigers their only league loss in the past four years. This time, Princeton stood strong and held off a Cornell offensive surge at the start of the second half. Princeton sophomore goalkeeper Jennifer King made seven saves in the second half while the score was still 2-0 to keep Cornell off the board.
The Tigers then sealed their win with two goals in the final nine minutes. First, senior Candice Arner scored her sixth goal and then senior Holly McGarvie capped this scoring with her 11th of the season on an assist from Sharkey.
King finished the game with nine saves to post her second consecutive shutout and fourth of the season. She has allowed just two goals on 25 shots this season. Princeton outshot Cornell 18-4 and had 10 corners to Cornell's six.
Princeton improved to 13-2 overall and 6-0 in the Ivy League with the win and captured a share of their 13th Ivy League Championship in the last 14 years. Princeton's postseason will being on Tues., Nov. 11 when the Tigers host the champion of the NorPac Conference in play-in game to the NCAA tournament. Princeton does have two regular season games remaining prior to that, including a non-conference game tomorrow at 2 p.m. against American at Class of '52 Stadium.
