2-0 Win Over Penn State Lifts Field Hockey to NCAA Quarterfinals
November 15, 2008 | Field Hockey
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Freshman Katie Reinprecht scored both goals as the ninth-ranked Princeton field hockey team shut out 11th-ranked Penn State 2-0 on Saturday afternoon in the opening round of the 2008 NCAA field hockey tournament at Syracuse. Princeton advanced to face the Orange in tomorrow's quarterfinals.
Princeton advances to the quarterfinal round of the tournament for the ninth time in 13 NCAA tournament appearances and the second appearance in a row. Princeton will meet third-ranked Syracuse in tomorrow's quarterfinal game at 2 p.m.
Princeton controlled play in the early going with several shots and corners at the Penn State end of the field. Princeton finally converted on its eighth shot in the 21st when Reinprecht's shot from just inside the circle bounced off of Penn State goalkeeper Jen Beaumont and rolled just inside the far post.
The Tigers continued their pressure through the end of the half but could not solve Beaumont again. Princeton had an 11-5 shot edge and an 8-3 edge in corners at the half. Penn State made a run to begin the second half and moved the shots margin to 11-10 early in the second half, but sophomore Jennifer King made a save on the only shot that was on goal during the stretch.
Princeton made it a two-goal game 10 minutes into the second half when Reinprecht notched her second goal of the game and her 15th of the season. The newly crowned Ivy League Player of the Year deflected senior Holly McGarvie's free hit from just outside of the circle up over Beaumont.
Princeton held from there as the Tigers completed the game with a 24-11 shot edge and a 14-7 edge in corners. King made three saves for the win and improved to 10-0 on the season and now has six shutouts. Beaumont stopped 11 shots in the loss.
Princeton win was its 17th of the year, its second highest win total in program history. Princeton won 18 games in 1996 and 17 in 1998 and 2001.
