The 11th-ranked Princeton field hockey team closes out the regular season on Friday night against Penn at Class of '52 Stadium. Princeton enters the game with hopes of a perfect 7-0 Ivy League season which would be the 12th undefeated league season for the Tigers.
Princeton clinched at least a share of its fourth straight Ivy League title and its 13th championship in the last 14 seasons with a 4-0 shutout at Cornell last Saturday. Cornell, now at 5-1, sits a game behind the Tigers in the standings. A win on Friday night would give the Tigers the Ivy League Championship outright.
Princeton moved to 14-2 overall and 6-0 in league play last weekend with wins over Cornell and American. Princeton also vaulted to the eighth ranking in the latest version of the NCAA RPI rankings that were released on Tuesday.
Princeton began the weekend with a win at Cornell, avenging a loss at home to the Big Red a season ago. Seniors Kraftin Schreyer and Katie Kinzer scored in the first half at Cornell to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead. From there, the Tigers had to hold off a strong Cornell attack early in the second half before two late goals from seniors Candice Arner and Holly McGarvie stretched the final margin to 4-0. Sophomore goalkeeper Jennifer King made a season-high nine saves in the win.
A day later, the Tigers picked up a big win in the RPI by getting past 19th-ranked American 5-2. Princeton scored first but two Eagle goals in the latter part of the first half gave American a 2-1 halftime lead. The Tigers rallied though, and dominated the second half with four unanswered goals to win going away. Junior Christina Bortz had the game winner and Arner, Schreyer, Kinzer and freshman Kathleen Sharkey added the other goals.
Sharkey, who had that goal and two assists at Cornell was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week for her efforts. It was her second such honor this season. King, who made two saves in the American win, was named to the league's Honor Roll. Freshman Katie Reinprecht, with an assist in Sunday's win, remains atop the Princeton scoring charts with 11 goals, 10 assists and 32 points. Sharkey and McGarvie also had 11 goals scored this season.
The Tigers will look to claim their 15th win of the season on Friday night when local Ivy-rival Penn visits Princeton. Princeton leads the all-time series with Penn 17-15-3 and is 8-5-2 at home in the series. The Tigers have won the last three meetings and that includes a 3-1 Princeton win in Philadelphia last season. Then-senior Paige Schmidt scored two goals in the win with McGarvie adding the third for the Tigers.
Penn is 6-10 overall and 4-2 in the Ivy League this season. The Quakers opened the season with a win over Saint Francis, but then lost their next seven contests before besting Harvard in late September. Penn dropped its next three but enters Friday's tilt with four straight wins. In that span, Penn has gotten by Columbia, Temple, Yale and last weekend, Brown.
Regardless of the outcome of Friday's game, the Tigers will be back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 11 at 1 p.m. for an NCAA Tournament Play-In game against the champion of the NorPac Conference. Princeton will learn who that opponent is when the league plays its conference championship game on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Longwood. California is the tournament's top seed.
