Penn Hangs On For 70-65 Win Over Princeton At The Palestra
February 12, 2008 | Men's Basketball
Another classic down-to-the-wire finish in the Princeton-Penn rivalry sure had a strange ending Tuesday night at The Palestra.
Princeton, which trailed by as many as eight points in the second half, had the ball down by one with under a minute to go. But Noah Savage's three-pointer missed and, three technical fouls later, the Quakers held on for a 70-65 win over the Tigers before 6,243 that braved the icy weather outside to make it to the gym.
Brian Grandieri grabbed the rebound of Savage's miss and was fouled by Princeton center Zach Finley, but both Finley and Grandieri were called for technical fouls after the play. Remy Cofield then hit two free throws with nine seconds left to make it 66-63, giving Princeton another chance to tie the game. But Savage was then called for a technical foul before the Tigers inbounded the ball, and Jack Eggleston's ensuing free throw and Kevin Egee's foul shot after that essentially ended the game.
The Tigers (5-15, 2-3 Ivy) led by as many as seven points early in the game, but Penn (8-14, 3-2 Ivy) took the lead midway through the first half and held onto it despite numerous Princeton comeback attempts.
Princeton, which trailed 35-30 at halftime, fell behind 46-38 after Grandieri's foul shot with 13 minutes left. But Kevin Steuerer's driving layup with seven minutes on the clock made it 51-48 Penn, and Kyle Koncz's three-point shot just over a minute later made it 55-54 Penn.
Steuerer then scored again in the paint to make it 57-56 Penn with 4:52 left, and the Tigers got a stop on the other end, but a two-on-one break opportunity ended in a turnover and the Tigers couldn't take the lead.
After two Eggleston free throws with 1:42 left made it 64-61 Penn, Savage scored in the lane thanks to an offensive rebound to make it 64-63 with 1:08 left. Penn's Kevin Egee then missed a three-pointer on the other end, setting up Princeton's final opportunity.
Finley led Princeton with 15 points despite being saddled with foul trouble for much of the second half. Gunn scored 13, while Savage and Steuerer each scored 12.
The Tigers shot 50% from the field for the game and held Penn to just 39% shooting, but the Quakers took advantage of their opportunities at the foul line, making 31 of their 36 attempts (86%).
Egee led Penn with 15 points, while Aron Cohen came off the bench to score 14 and Eggleston and Cofield each scored 11.
Penn improved its all-time edge in the series to 120-97. The teams meet again March 11 at Jadwin Gym.
