Second-Half Push Leads Women's Basketball Past Brown, 67-59
February 29, 2008 | Women's Basketball
PRINCETON -- A second-half rally turned an eight-point Brown lead into as much as a 13-point advantage for the Princeton women's basketball team Friday night as the Tigers defeated the Bears 67-59 at Jadwin Gym.
Princeton swept the season series from Brown and improved to 6-20 overall and 3-7 in Ivy League play. Brown dropped to 2-23 overall and 1-10 in the league.
Freshman Krystal Hill led Princeton with 19 points and eight rebounds, scoring in double figures for the fourth time in the last seven games. Meagan Cowher added 16 points, raising her career total to 1,581 in fourth place on the Princeton list behind former teammate Becky Brown '06 at 1,608.
"After scoring 20 points in the first half, I was pleased that we were able to score 47 points in the second half by diversifying our attack," Princeton head coach Courtney Banghart said.
The second-half rally was helped by a dramatic difference in field goal percentage for the Orange and Black between the two halves. Princeton shot 31.8 percent in the first half and 48.1 percent after the break to average 40.8 percent for the game. Brown won the rebounding battle 33-29, but the Tigers countered with five fewer turnovers, 19-14.
Brown also had two players in double figures, led by Anne O'Neal with 16 points and Ashley Alexander with 14.
The Bears led most of the way in the first half. Brown's largest lead before the break was nine, and the Bears led by eight inside the final minute of the half before two Hill free throws cut the deficit to six for a 26-20 halftime score.
Brown had the first bucket after the break, but Princeton followed with an 8-0 run to square the game at 28-28. Brown scored the next six points, but the game was soon tied again at 36-36.
The rally that Princeton needed then came. Down by three at 40-37 with 10:48 to play, Princeton embarked on a 15-2 run that opened a 10-point lead with 7:32 left on a pair of Cowher free throws at 52-42. Princeton led by as much as 13 before Brown cut the deficit to five with a minute to play. The Tigers made just enough free throws, going 4 of 7 in the final minute, while Brown's scoring went dry for 57 critical seconds to preserve the Princeton win.
Princeton will honor its seniors Saturday prior to the final game of the 2007-08 season at Jadwin Gym against Yale Saturday at 6 p.m.
