Freshmen Steal Show on Senior Night as Women's Hoops Beats Yale, 64-59
March 01, 2008 | Women's Basketball
PRINCETON -- It was Senior Night for the Princeton women's basketball team at Jadwin Gym Saturday, but the freshmen came up huge.
Krystal Hill led the Tigers with 15 points and Shelbie Pool had two big three-pointers in the final two minutes to seal a 64-59 win over Yale.
The win enabled Princeton to sweep the weekend from Brown and Yale, improving to 7-20 on the season and 4-7 in the Ivy League. Yale dropped to 8-17, 6-6.
"They competed because we had a chance to win two home games," Princeton coach Courtney Banghart said of her team. "I'm glad that we kept that chip on our shoulder and that we're not just playing it out."
Ali Prichard, in her final game at Jadwin Gym, scored 10 points while fellow senior Meagan Cowher had eight to raise her career total to 1,589, 19 points behind former teammate Becky Brown '06 for third on the Princeton list.
With field goal percentage separated by only three percentage points in Princeton's favor and the Tigers grabbing only four more rebounds than the Bulldogs, the turnover statistic was a difference-maker. Yale had 23 giveaways to Princeton's 15, right around its Ivy League-low average. Two Bulldogs finished with double-figure points as Melissa Colborne had a game-high 20 and Stephanie Marciano added 12.
The first major run of the game came from Yale toward the midway point of the first half. Princeton had an 11-10 lead, but the Bulldogs scored the next 10 points to take a nine-point lead. Princeton ended the half on an 11-2 run to cut a 10-point Yale lead with five minutes to go to a one-point difference at halftime.
Yale again had a nine-point lead soon after the break at 38-29, but the Tigers posted another 11-2 run to square the game at 40-40.
The game saw its fifth and final tie when Mady Gobrecht split a pair of free throws that made it 56-56 with 2:02 left. Pool hit the first of her two late three-pointers on Princeton's next possession to put the Tigers up 59-56, and after two empty Yale possessions, Pool effectively sealed the game by burying another three for a six-point lead with 35 seconds left.
Princeton split its last four free throws from that point and Yale mustered only a Marciano three-pointer in the last 35 seconds.
The Tigers will end the season with three road games, first at Columbia Friday and Cornell Saturday before finishing up at Penn Tuesday, Mar. 11.
