Nightingale Finishes Second, Costello Fourth in 1,500 Races At ECAC/IC4A Meet
May 19, 2008 | Men's Track and Field, Women's Track and Field
A pair of top finishes by All-Americas in 1,500-meter finals highlighted Princeton performances on the final day of the ECAC/IC4A Outdoor Track & Field Championships Sunday at Weaver Track & Field Stadium.
On the men's side, senior David Nightingale was in a battle with William & Mary's Ian Fitzgerald and Iona's Abraham Ng'etich throughout the race that ended in a near dead heat between the three runners. In the end, Nightingale's 3:46.31, an NCAA regional qualifying mark, was just five-hundreths of a second behind Fitzgerald and three-tenths ahead of third-place Ng'etich.
In the women's 1,500 just a few minutes before, Costello was fourth in 4:25.44 as each of the top seven finishers in Sunday's final reached the regional qualifying standard. The NCAA East regional takes place at the end of the month at Florida State University.
Later in the day, Princeton had a third-place finisher in the 3,000 meters as freshman Ashley Higginson ran the 7 1/2 laps in 9:36.39, just three seconds behind the winning time in the race. Classmate Sarah Cummings was seventh in that field in 9:50.03.
The Tigers also had field event standouts participate on the men's side Sunday. George Abyad and Eric Plummer each reached the 52-foot mark in the shot put, while Tim Lanni threw better than 50 feet. Nick Crumpton was in the triple jump field and had a best mark of 48 feet, 1 3/4 inches, good for 12th in the 27-athlete field.
Princeton also was in the final of the two-mile (4X800) relay on the men's side, finishing sixth out of nine teams in 7:36.11 in a strong field.
As a team, the Tigers finished eighth on the men's side with a score of 28. Liberty University won the meet with a score of 62. The Princeton women scored 21 total points for an 18th-place finish. Connecticut won the women's meet with a score of 83.
