UConn Nips Field Hockey in 3-2 Overtime

STORRS, Conn. -- Lauren Aird's overtime goal lifted No. 5 Connecticut over the 17th-ranked Princeton field hockey team 3-2 on Sunday afternoon. Junior Christina Bortz and freshman Katie Reinprecht gave Princeton leads of 1-0 and 2-1 in the game but a late goal tied the game for UConn and the Huskies would win it in overtime.
Princeton outchanced UConn in the opening period and took advantage when Bortz scored in the 24th minute from Reinprecht to give Princeton a 1-0 lead. Bortz's third goal of the season came on Princeton's sixth shot of the game. The Tigers recorded the game's first seven shots before Connecticut put its first shot on the Princeton net. The Tigers outshot UConn 8-3 in the opening period.
The Huskies evened the score 10 minutes into the second half when Lindsey Leck scored unassisted. UConn had more chances in the second period but again found itself trailing two minutes later when Reinprecht scored her third goal of the season in the 28th minute.
Princeton held the lead until Leck scored with 4:33 remaining on the clock to even the score at 2-2. The Huskies then had three shots in the closing minutes but junior goalie Cynthia Wray made two saves and a third shot was blocked.
The team's played a scoreless first overtime period in which the Tigers drew three corners and had five shots, two of which were on goal and stopped by UConn goalie Andrea Mainiero.
UConn was unable to muster a shot in the first overtime session, but recorded the lone shot of the second session when Aird scored 16 seconds into the period with an assist from Leck.
Princeton outshot UConn 18-14 and outcornered the Huskies 7-5. Wray made six saves for Princeton, while Mainiero stopped seven shots.
The loss was Princeton's first of the season and dropped the Tigers to 3-1 overall. UConn improved to 6-0. Princeton opens the Ivy League season next Saturday at 12 noon at home against Dartmouth.
