Peteraf's OT Goal Gives Women's Soccer 1-0 Win over Towson
September 19, 2008 | Women's Soccer
PRINCETON -- Sarah Peteraf is two-for-two in coming through for the Princeton women's soccer team on Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium, and the Tigers are two-for-two in their new home.
In her latest clutch moment, the senior scored a golden goal in the 97th minute Friday night against Towson, lifting Princeton to a 1-0 win in the team's first game in nearly two weeks.
Princeton was scheduled to make this weekend their third straight Friday-Sunday double, but Hurricane Ike washed out a pair of games in Texas and left the Tigers to practice among themselves. The rust was evident early on.
"It was two weeks' layoff," Princeton head coach Julie Shackford said. "We did enough to gut it out, but it was one of those games where we were not connecting, not sharp, no breaks."
Princeton had nine of its 13 shots in the second half and outshot Towson 13-3 for the game. Peteraf had six of Princeton's attempts, none more important than her recovery of a loose ball from near the top of the 18-yard box that won it with 3:13 to play in the first overtime.
"It's kind of a blur because the game was very long," Peteraf said. "The ball was
bouncing around off to the left side of the goal in the 18. It popped
out and slid across around the 12 or so, and I was open and was able to
find the far side away from the keeper."
In Princeton's only other home match this season, the stadium's opener against Boston University on Sept. 5, Peteraf had a game-tying goal in the second half before Lisa Chinn scored in the 88th minute for a 2-1 win.
"Peteraf has done really well this season," Shackford said. "We've been able to count on her, which is nice."
Princeton (2-1) will travel to New York City to take on St. John's for a Sunday afternoon game at 1 p.m. The team's last game before the Ivy League opener Sept. 27 will be Tuesday night, Sept. 23, at Colgate, in a game scheduled to replace one of the contests lost to Ike.
