McGarvie Scores Three as Field Hockey Outscores Albany 6-3
September 28, 2008 | Field Hockey
ALBANY, N.Y. -- Senior Holly McGarvie scored three goals as the 15th-ranked Princeton field hockey team won its fourth-straight game on Sunday afternoon at 18th-ranked Albany. Freshman Kathleen Sharkey added two goals in the win.
Princeton, which scored six goals in a win on Saturday as well, wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as Sharkey scored her sixth goal of the season 58 seconds into the game. Albany's Alysia Hough evened the score in the 13th minute of the game and the contest stayed tied at 1-1 until McGarvie put Princeton ahead for good with her first goal of the game when the Tigers converted on a penalty corner. Seniors Candice Arner and Kraftin Schreyer assisted on the goal.
Princeton extended the score to 4-1 with two goals in a two-minute span. McGarvie scored her second goal of the game in the 27th minute unassisted when she tipped in a blocked shot. Then, minutes later, junior Kaitlyn Perrelle scored her first goal of the season on a rebound following a corner.
The Tigers held the 4-1 lead through the half, but the Great Danes chipped two goals off the Princeton lead early in the second half. Albany capitalized on a pair of corners 1:58 apart as Jess Lindsey and Michele Polizois moved Albany within a goal at 43:32.
Princeton held from there defensively and added two goals in the final three minutes to pull ahead late in the game. McGarvie scored on a corner from Schreyer and freshman Katie Reinprecht for her third goal of the game and her seventh of the season. Sharkey then closed the scoring with 1:54 remaining with an unassisted goal. It was also her seventh of the season. McGarvie and Sharkey are both a single goal off of Reinprecht's team lead of eight.
Princeton outshot Albany 18-15 with nine shots in each half. Albany's 15 shots were lopsided as the Great Danes had three in the first half and 12 in the second. Albany had two more corners in the contest, 10-8. Junior Cynthia Wray made seven saves to earn the win for the Tigers, while Ashley Ross also stopped seven shots in the loss.
Princeton is now 7-1 overall and has won four games in a row. The Tigers return to action on Friday night at Columbia. The game will be the end of a nine-game stretch in which Princeton will have played eight of nine games on the road.
