Women's Hockey Fights Off Yale In 3-2 Thriller At Baker Rink
January 30, 2009 | Women's Ice Hockey
Katherine Dineen scored two goals, including the game winner in the final second of a third-period power play, to lead the Princeton women's hockey team to a 3-2 win over a stubborn Yale squad Friday night at Baker Rink. The win keeps Princeton tied with Harvard for third in the ECAC standings.
Princeton outshot Yale 26-21 and held a 30-27 advantage in faceoffs. Princeton goaltender Kristen Young made 19 saves, including a couple of point-blank opportunities that could have forced overtime.
Dineen opened the scoring with her third goal of the season 5:11 into the game. After a Yale icing call forced a draw in the Bulldogs' end, Stephanie Denino was able to send a pass back to Charissa Stadnyk along the right boards. The Princeton freshman found Dineen in the middle of the ice, and she fired it past Genny Ladiges for the 1-0 lead.
Yale evened the score less just a little over four minutes later, when Danielle Kozlowski sent a pass in front of the net to Bray Ketchum. The Bulldog sophomore found a spot between Young's pads for her ninth of the season.
Strong efforts by Julie Johnson and Laura Martindale helped Princeton go into the first intermission with a 2-1 lead. Johnson was able to get the puck deep and fired a shot that Ladiges saved, and it led to a scrum right in front of the Bulldog net. The puck came out to Martindale, who found the smallest opening between a handful of players and put the puck in the left side of the net for her third of the season.
The lead would be quite brief in the second period. Yale's Helen Resor stole the first pass off the opening faceoff and fired a shot from the left circle past Young for her fourth of the season.
Princeton avoided big trouble later in the period when consecutive penalties against Dineen and Martindale left the Tigers two players down for 55 seconds. Princeton fought off the 5-on-3 without giving up a dangerous shot, but Young had to come up big on the ensuing 5-on-4. When a clearing attempt went off Christine Foster's skate, it landed on Kozlowski's stick; the Yale senior took a point-blank shot that Young saved. Princeton fought off the rest of the power play and went into the second intermission even at 2-2.
The Yale defense also had a big hand in staying even. Despite being outshot 20-12 over the first 40 minutes, the Bulldogs fought off four power plays.
The fifth power play would prove to be the winner, even if it took 1:59 of it to get one past Ladiges. A tripping call against Resor gave Princeton the first extra-player opportunity of the third period. After having been fought off for most of the way, Denino was able to find defensive linemate Dineen near the right circle. The Princeton veteran wound out and blistered a shot in the net to give Princeton its third lead of the game.
Yale would get one more power play, and followed with an empty-net flurry late, but Princeton held on. Young stood strong on one more major opportunity, as Ketchum took the puck from the left boards right into the goal area, but Young kept her ground and knocked it away.
Princeton will remain home Saturday at 4 p.m. to take on the Brown Bears, a 5-0 winner over Quinnipiac Friday night.
