Top-Ranked Women's Squash Routs Yale 8-1
January 31, 2009 | Women's Squash
The last time Princeton competed in New Haven, it was topping Harvard 6-3 for the 2007 national team championship. The Tigers have the same goal in mind for the 2009 season, and they took another step closer with an 8-1 victory over No. 5 Yale.
Three days after earning a 6-3 win over second-ranked Penn, the No. 1 Princeton women's squash team looked strong again in moving to 8-0 overall, 4-0 in the Ivy League. Yale claimed a won at the No. 1 position, but Princeton swept the remaining eight positions against the host Bulldogs.
"I was really happy with the way we played," head coach Gail Ramsay said. "I was pleased with the focus and intensity we showed."
One win came from senior tri-captain Maggie O'Toole, who bounced back from a tough loss against Penn for a convincing 9-6, 9-7, 9-1 win over Alexandra Van Arkel at the No. 6 position.
"I had lost to her in the Ivy scrimmage," O'Toole said. "I felt really calm and confident today and really believed in myself and my team. It felt really good to get back in the groove, and I think the team really put out a great effort today and show everybody what we can do."
Another player who had a strong performance was Kaitlin Sennatt, who dropped only eight points in a 3-0 win over Rhetta Nadas.
"I played her in the scrimmage and had a tough go the last time," Sennatt said. "I felt a little more comfortable this time, which was great."
"It was a great win for us," senior tri-captain Aly Brady said after a 9-7, 9-1, 9-4 victory over Tara Wadhwa. "Tara is a very good player. I tried to get my shots deeper in the second game and kept it going in the third game. When I came off the court, I found out we were up 6-0, which was amazing."
Both No. 2 Neha Kumar and No. 3 Emery Maine were extended to four games, but both came away with victories. Sophomore Jackie Moss was even more impressive, sweeping a trio of 9-0 games.
Princeton will return to the court next Saturday when it takes on Dartmouth; a win would clinch a share of the 2009 Ivy League championship.
