Freshman Frey Opens Wrestling Season By Winning Binghamton Open
November 16, 2009 | Wrestling
Head coach Chris Ayres felt good about this freshman class of wrestlers, and it didn't take long for those feelings to be proven true. Freshman 125-pounder Garrett Frey, who wrestled for national prep power Blair Academy last year, outlasted 27 other wrestlers in his weight class, including representatives from every other Ivy League team, to win the Binghamton Open. It was the highlight for a strong overall day for the improving Princeton program.
Frey opened the tournament with a pair of second-period pins and a 12-1 major decision before facing Cornell's Tyler Biscaha in the semifinal. Frey won his closest match of the day to advance to the final with an 11-9 win. He faced Brown's Greg Einfrank, the EIWA's fourth-ranked 125-pounder in the preseason ratings, and earned a 9-4 decision.
While Frey had the most successful showing, several Tigers earned victories in the season-opening showcase. At 133 pounds, freshman Luis Ramos won a 10-7 match in the consolation round. Classmate Zach Bintliff, who lost his championship bracket match by one point, also won a match in the consolation round.
Sophomore Andy Lowy recorded a pin to advance to the second round of the 165-pound championship bracket, while junior co-captain and 174-pounder Travis Erdman won two matches on the day, including one in the championship round. Sophomore Kurt Brendel, Princeton's top freshman of the 2008-09 season, won one championship match and two consolation matches in the 184-pound weight class.
Freshman Charles Fox won his first match in the 197-pound championship bracket, while Bobby Grogan wrestled up to heavyweight and nearly won a match before failling 5-4 in overtime.
