Last time out: Against Army, Princeton came close to rallying from a deficit that was at 20 points with less than 12 minutes to play. The Tigers whittled it to as little as three, but came no closer in the 56-52 defeat.
Stick-um, maybe?: Princeton and Army combined for 50 turnovers, including 27 committed by the Tigers. Nine Princeton players, including everyone who played at least a full minute, contributed to the total.
Chilly: Princeton's .347 shooting percentage was its lowest since the 32.7 percent it shot at St. Bonaventure last Dec. 6. Princeton had not shot a poorer percentage on its home rims since Jan. 14, 2006 against Cornell when the Tigers shot 30.6 percent.
Lake's swell: Nick Lake's 10 points and seven rebounds were his largest total of those two stats since scoring 14 and grabbing nine boards at Fordham last Nov. 26.
Few hands: Six players doing all the scoring, as happened against Army, might not seem like a lot, but just six players contributed to Princeton's season-ending win at Penn last March.
Wrong way, right way: Princeton's point total, field goal percentage and three-point FG percentage have decreased with each game, but its free throw percentage, rebounding average and assist total have increased with each game.
45 percent: Princeton allowed an opponent to shoot 45 percent for the first time this season when Army did so Saturday afternoon. All last season, Princeton did not win a game when its opponent shot better than .450, going 0-8 in such instances.
Whistles: Princeton was called for 20 fouls against Army, reaching that number for the first time this season. Last season, Princeton went 4-7 in games in which it was called for at least 20 fouls.
Crime's up: Princeton allowed 14 steals to Army, more than the Tigers allowed in their first two games combined (nine). Princeton hadn't allowed that many steals since South Carolina swiped 18 in a 26-turnover game for the Tigers last Dec. 2.
Long range: Princeton took 31 three-point attempts against Army, its most since getting 31 attempts up against Central Connecticut State last December. Princeton was 4-7 last season when it took at least 20 three-point attempts.
Rebounding leaders: Princeton has started two of its centers in each of the first three games, but neither is the team's leading rebounder. That title goes to two other players, Nick Lake and Ian Hummer, with 15 boards over the first three games.
On GW: The Colonials were picked 13th of 14 teams in the Atlantic-10, but they aren't playing to that expectation. GW has won its first three games and is coming off a 43-point home-opening win over UMBC Saturday.
Hobbs vs. Princeton: GW coach Karl Hobbs spent 18 seasons as a player and assistant coach in the northeast at Boston University and Connecticut, but the Tigers didn't face those teams while he was there. With the win over Princeton in Hobbs' rookie season as GW's head coach, Hobbs is 1-0 all-time against the Tigers.
Heydays: Both Princeton and George Washington are trying to return to success it found in the recent past. GW is trying to bounce back from two straight losing seasons after advancing to three straight NCAA Tournaments from 2005-07. Princeton is looking for its first winning season since 2005 and first NCAA berth since 2004.
Pops: GW alum "Pops" Mensah-Bonsu and Princeton assistant coach Scott Greenman were high school teammates at St. Augustine Prep in Richland, N.J. Mensah-Bonsu also played a year at the Hun School in Princeton, which counts among its recent Princeton basketball alums Douglas Davis and Noah Savage '08. Mensah-Bonsu is currently with the Toronto Raptors.
Old reliable: Junior Dan Mavraides is the only Tiger to score in double digits in all three games this season. Counting the final game of last season, his double-digit scoring streak is at four games.
Good help: Dan Mavraides posted a career-high five assists against Army.
Hummer comes home: Freshman Ian Hummer will play near his hometown of Vienna, Va., and in the city where he helped lead Gonzaga College High to a city title as a junior.
Barrett's best: Freshman Will Barrett had some statistical personal superlatives against Army for his young career, picking up a team-best three steals along with two assists and three rebounds in 26 minutes.
Step right up: Princeton has not had the same leading scorer in back-to-back games yet this season. Douglas Davis and Dan Mavraides co-led against Central Michigan, followed by Zach Finley against Manhattan and Mavraides against Army.
D.C. foes: Of Princeton's games against the four Division I basketball teams in Washington (American, GW, Georgetown, Howard), Georgetown has been the opponent on 11 of 15 occasions.
The series: Princeton and GW have played only three times. The first came in 1926 at Princeton's University Gym, a 36-17 Tiger win. The next came in 1961, a first-round NCAA Tournament game at Madison Square Garden III, won by Princeton 84-67. The most recent came in Washington, but at the Verizon Center (then the MCI Center) on Dec. 3, 2001 as part of the BB&T Classic. It was a 60-57 win with present GW coach Karl Hobbs in his first season at the post. Current GW assistant coach Greg Collucci led all scorers with 23 points.
GW knows us too: The nation's first president had historical ties to the school that became Princeton, then named the College of New Jersey. In 1777 in the aftermath of the Battle of Princeton, Washington's forces helped drive the British army out of Nassau Hall, now the main administration building. It was also in Nassau Hall that in 1783, Washington joined the meetings of the Continental Congress, six years before he became president.
An early rivalry: George Washington took a stand in the Princeton-Yale rivalry 76 years before the first football game between the two schools. According to author Alexander Leitch, Washington wrote a letter to his step-grandson in 1797, a Princeton student, urging him to follow a course of study recommended by then-university president and Princeton alum Samuel Stanhope Smith, for whom the current Stanhope Hall is now named, over that recommended by a Yale alum named Zechariah Lewis because "no college has turned out better scholars or more estimable characters than Nassau."
