Last time out: George Washington pulled away late from Princeton Tuesday night in a 65-50 win, breaking open a 49-44 game with five minutes to play. GW used a 39-22 rebounding edge and 5-for-26 three-point shooting by Princeton to get the win. Princeton scored the first five points and last led 12-11 closing in on 11 minutes left in the first half.
Last meeting vs. Cal: Joe Shipp led the Golden Bears with 15 points while future German Olympian Konrad Wysocki led all scorers with 17 for Princeton as Cal defeated the Tigers 70-58 in Berkeley as part of the Black Coaches Association tournament to start the 2001-02 season.
We meet again: The last time Sydney Johnson wore a collegiate uniform, it was against the Golden Bears. Cal defeated Princeton 55-52 in the first round of the 1997 NCAA Tournament at Wake Forest, with future NFLer Tony Gonzalez scoring 13 points but not leading the Golden Bears. Randy Duck led Cal with a game-high 16, while the Tigers' Mitch Henderson '98, now an assistant under then-Princeton head coach Bill Carmody at Northwestern, scored 15.
Bay Bengals: Marcus Schroeder (Concord, Calif./De La Salle) and Dan Mavraides (San Mateo, Calif./Serra) will have a homecoming of sorts this weekend.
Brother Bear: Princeton head coach Sydney Johnson's older brother Stephen is a Cal alum. Stephen Johnson's 1993 Golden Bears advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 after a second-round upset of two-time defending champion Duke.
First time around: Princeton eased past Cal 85-59 in the 1971-72 season in a Kentucky-hosted tournament before dropping a 14-point game to Adolph Rupp and the Wildcats in the event final.
For three: Princeton took 57 three-pointers over the last two games, making 13 (22.8 percent). Princeton took more than 50 three-pointers in back-to-back games just once last season, but the Tigers have 21 games with 30-plus three-point attempts over the current decade.
Slipping: Princeton's field-goal percentage and three-point percentage has slipped in each game, to .346 from the field and .192 from three-point range against George Washington.
A challenge: Princeton has played with a deficit in each of the four games and has come back to win two of those games.
Steals: Princeton had 12 steals at George Washington, the Tigers' most of the two-plus-season Sydney Johnson era and most since getting 13 at Iona on Dec. 30, 2006. Johnson, a '97 Princeton alum, is the program's career leader in steals.
Points: Princeton's point total has decreased with each game, from 71 against Central Michigan to 50 at GW. Princeton last had a sub-50 scoring game at Columbia on Mar. 6, 2009, with 44 points.
Boarding: GW outrebounded Princeton 39-22 Tuesday, the biggest rebounding deficit for the Tigers since Yale outrebounded Princeton by 20, 43-23, last Feb. 13.
Hold onto that ball: Princeton cut its turnovers by more than half from the 27-turnover game against Army to just 12 at GW.
Over 40: Princeton has allowed its opponents to shoot better than 40 percent from the field for the last eight games, including the last four of a season ago. In that time, Princeton has shot better than 40 percent four times and had a record of 4-4 in those games. Princeton's better-than-40 games did not always align with its wins in those eight contests, however.
Threes allowed: GW shot 56.3 percent (9 for 16) from beyond the arc against the Tigers, the highest percentage for a Princeton opponent since Feb. 9, 2008, when Columbia hit 8 of 14 for a 57.1 percent clip.
No breaks: GW made 16 of 17 free throws against Princeton, a 94.1 percent clip.
Whistles: This season, Princeton is 0-2 when called for more fouls than its opponent and 2-0 when called for fewer fouls. Last season, Princeton was 10-13 when getting called for more fouls and 3-1 when called for fewer.
Inside-Outside: Princeton had trouble getting the ball to its big men in its two losses this season. In the first two games, Pawel Buczak was 6 for 16 on non-three pointers for 16 points (not including threes). In the last two games, Buczak is 1 for 4 on non-threes for two points. Zach Finley was 9 for 15 in the first two games for 29 points. In the last two games, Finley was 1 for 2 for two points. Finley played 44 minutes in the first two games compared to 16 in the last two. Buczak's minutes decreased less, from 72 in the first two games to 39 in the last two.
Minutes up: The long freshman Will Barrett has seen a big jump in minutes in the last two games, playing 49 minutes compared to 14 in the first two contests. Barrett was 2 for 10 from the field in his last two games, but had his first multi-FG game at GW and had three rebounds in each game.
Lake up, down: Nick Lake's minutes and points have been up and down this season, scoring 19 points in 58 minutes against CMU and Army. Against Manhattan and GW, he had no points in nine minutes, taking one total shot. The GW game was his first non-start of the season.
Davis starts: Sophomore guard Douglas Davis, who led the team in scoring last season, made his first start of 2009-10 at GW after serving as an offensive spark off the bench in the eight games prior, continuing back to last season. Davis was 3 for 12 for eight points at GW.
Steady Schroeder: Senior guard Marcus Schroeder has seen his point total go up in each game, from three at CMU to eight at GW. Schroeder has played at least 29 minutes in each game while starting all four. He has also had at least two rebounds and two assists in each game. Schroeder's assist-to-turnover ratio is 10 to 6 this season.
Saunders scores: Sophomore forward Patrick Saunders scored a season-high 12 points at GW in his first start since Dec. 20, 2008 at Central Connecticut. He had three double-digit scoring games last season.
Dependable Dan: Junior forward Dan Mavraides has scored in 25 straight games, the second-longest streak on the team after Douglas Davis, who has scored in all 31 games as a Tiger.
Rebounding leaders: Ian Hummer and Dan Mavraides co-lead Princeton with 4.0 rebounds per game. Hummer, if he finishes as a team leader in rebounding, would be the first freshman since Rick Hielscher '95, in 1991, to lead the Tigers in rebounding.
Point leaders: Princeton has not had the same person lead the team in scoring in back-to-back games this season. Dan Mavraides is the only repeat leader, co-leading at Central Michigan with 16 and leading again versus Army with 14 points.
We see UC: Between the Princeton men's and women's basketball teams this Thanksgiving weekend, the Tigers will face three of the six Division I University of California teams, with the women taking on UCLA and UC Irvine. Santa Barbara, Davis and Riverside escape the Tigers this weekend.
Princeton vs. the Pac-10: Princeton's last game against a Pac-10 school was at the Maui Invitational in Nov. 2007, a loss to Arizona State. All-time, the Tigers are 7-11 against Pac-10 schools, with the last win a memorable one as the Tigers defeated defending champ UCLA in the first round of the 1996 NCAA Tournament. Sydney Johnson's 11 points led the team.
Montgomery vs. Princeton: Though Stanford is Princeton's most-faced Pac-10 opponent (the Tigers hold a 3-1 lead), the Tigers didn't face the Cardinal duing Mike Montgomery's 18 seasons as head coach. Stanford defeated Princeton in Dec. 2005 during Montgomery's stint with the Golden State Warriors. Current LSU head man Trent Johnson, once an assistant under Montgomery on The Farm, coached the Cardinal in that contest.
Bears vs. Tigers, beyond the arc: Cal is outshooting Princeton 39.3 percent to 29.8 percent from three-point range this season. Of Cal's 33 threes made, 23 have come from Jerome Randle (13) and Patrick Christopher (10). Dan Mavraides has 10 of Princeton's 25.
Bears vs. Tigers, hustle board: Princeton has 13 blocks in four games compared to 10 blocks in five games for Cal, while Princeton is out-stealing Cal 30-29 with Princeton having played one fewer game.
Contrast in styles: Princeton is scoring 58.5 points per game to its opponents' 60.8, while Cal is scoring 78.4 PPG to 69.8 for the Bears' opponents.
