Hynes and Slovenski Named Outstanding Performers

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (3/1/09) ? The Princeton men's track and field team finished in second place at the Indoor Track & Field Championship in Cambridge, Mass.
Although the team didn't win the team event, it did have the meet's top two athletes. Freshman David Slovenski and senior Duane Hynes were both named the Men's Most Outstanding Performers after a tie in the ballot.
Slovenski won the pole vault in a meet record 17' 3.5” which matched a 27-year old conference all-time best, set in 1972. Hynes won the heptathlon for the second straight season. Hynes earned 5,197 points in the heptathlon competing on a broken foot.
Cornell won the 2009 Heptagonal with 176.5 points, while Princeton earned 121.5 points. Columbia was third with 82, followed by Yale with 55, Brown with 52, Penn with 42, Harvard with 41 and Dartmouth with 18.
In addition to Hynes win the heptathlon, the Tigers earned victories in three other events.
Senior Chris Vasich won the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.05, besting favorite Matt Jasmin of Brown by two hundredths of a second.
Junior Justin Frick won the high jump, leaping to 7' 2.5” reaching NCAA provisional qualifying standards. Teammate Ian Fox reached 6' 8.25” for fifth place.
Sophomore Mike Eddy won the 500-meter dash with a time of 1:02.65, coming in nearly a second ahead of the second-place runner.
After a sixth-place finish in yesterday's 3000, freshman Brian Leung captured third place in the 5000-meter run. He covered the course in 14:27.70 to give his team six points. Teammate Donn Cabral added two points by finishing in fifth place with a 14:29.28.
Sophomore Kyle Soloff and freshman Trevor Van Ackeren placed fifth and sixth in the 1000-meter run to contribute three points to Princeton's team total. Soloff clocked in at 2:30.72 with Van Ackeren right behind at 2:30.81.
Senior Michael Maag scored two points for Princeton in the mile, coming in at 4:16.86 for fifth place.
Senior Ian Thomson took fifth place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.13, giving Princeton two points. Sophomore Meko McCray delivered Princeton one point towards the team total, finishing the 60-meter dash in 7.12 for seventh place.
In the relays, Princeton took second place in the 4x400 with a time of 3:16.58, just .12 seconds behind the first-place team from Cornell. The 4x800 and the distance medley both finished fourth at 7:42.58 and 10:03.44. In all the Tigers earned 16 points off its relay events.
