Women's Track Takes Second at Heps

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (3/1/09) ? The Princeton women's track and field team finished in second place at the Indoor Track & Field Championship in Cambridge, Mass.
Cornell won the 2009 Heptagonal with 117.5 points, while Princeton earned 99 points. In third place was Harvard with 79.5 followed by Brown with 65, Penn with 54, Columbia with 42, Dartmouth with 41 and Yale with 29.
Junior Liz Costello finished second in the mile with NCAA provisional qualifying time of 4:47.47. She and Meaghan Lessard of Columbia broke away from the pack and created a wide margin between the rest of the competitors. Sophomore Ashley Higginson came in at 4:55.95 for fifth place. In all Princeton earned 10 points in the event.
After a successful run the 5,000 meters yesterday, the middle distance runners did it again in the 3,000, taking 2-3-4-5 place. Sophomore Sarah Cummings was second with a time of 9:35.59, followed by senior Jolee VanLeuven at 9:38.16. Freshman Alex Banfich and junior Reilly Kiernan were fourth and fifth at 9:41.35 and 9:41.92. Of the 31 points up for grab in the event, the Tigers earned 20 of them.
Freshman Eileen Moran took third place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.88, earning six points towards the Tigers' team total. Senior Agatha Offorjebe also placed third, in the 400-meter dash, clocking in at 55.22.
Sophomore Thanithia Billings was third in the shot put, throwing to 46' 3.50” to give the Tigers six points.
In the relays, the Tigers earned eight points taking fourth in both the 4x800 and 4x400. In the 4x400 the squad came in at 3:52.51 and in the 4x800 the team crossed the line at 9:00.63.
The ECAC Championship will be held in Boston next weekend, March 7-8.
