Utah Shuts Out Women's Soccer, 2-0
September 10, 2009 | Women's Soccer
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah -- Following a stalemate of a first half against the Princeton women's soccer team Wednesday night, Utah broke through with two goals after the break that led the Utes to a 2-0 victory.
Utah (5-2), which was ranked No. 21 in the nation by the NSCAA until it lost its last two games, was able to present its coach, Rich Manning, with his 100th career victory. That cost Princeton (1-2) head coach Julie Shackford the chance to move one win closer to 200 for her career between Carnegie Mellon and Princeton. Shackford currently has 196 wins in 18-plus seasons.
Perhaps Princeton's best chance to score was on the second of back-to-back corner kicks with 30 minutes left and Utah up 1-0. Despite pinballing off legs in front of the net, the ball continued to find Ute defenders instead of a solid Princeton boot.
Princeton was put in that hole on a 52nd-minute header by Utah's Erin Dalley square in the crease off a ball served from the far corner. Utah doubled the lead when Natalie Young arced a ball over Princeton keeper Alyssa Pont from outside the near corner of the 18-yard box.
The Tigers held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks yet managed only four shots on goal, all into the arms of Utah keeper Hannah Turpen. Overall, shots were even at 11-11 with each keeper making four saves. Princeton was shut out for the first time this season.
Princeton will travel to Laramie, Wyo. Thursday for a 4 p.m. Mountain Time game Friday against Wyoming.
