Wyoming Breaks Away for 1-0 Win over Women's Soccer

LARAMIE, Wyo. -- A second-half breakway goal with 31 minutes to play stood up as Wyoming defeated the Princeton women's soccer team 1-0 Friday evening in Laramie, Wyo.
After Wyoming's Juliana Candelaria launched a breakaway shot over the net in the 58th minute, it looked like Princeton and goalkeeper Alyssa Pont would get out of another pressure situation a minute later when another Cowgirl slipped through the defense.
Several Tigers caught up to Nicole Rice as she neared the net, getting Rice to fire her first attempt off a Princeton defender. With the ball still loose, Chelsea Coddington corralled it and tucked her attempt inside the left post for a 1-0 lead.
Princeton's (1-3) two matches against Mountain West Conference teams this week played out similarly, with Princeton either winning or tying the shot totals and the teams holding each other scoreless in the first half. Against Wyoming (4-1-1), Princeton outshot the Cowgirls 12-9 and forced goalkeeper Courtney Merkle to make four saves to three for Pont.
Just as in Wednesday's match against Utah, however the home team capitalized on chances where the Tigers couldn't get a break.
Rookie Caitlin Blosser led Princeton with four shots while four other players had two. One of those was second-half substitute Alissa Boddie, who had a couple near misses wide of the net.
The Tigers had an opportunity to tie the game with 11 minutes left on a free kick just outside the 18-yard box, but Merkle made two saves to keep her team ahead.
Princeton will have a week off before traveling to Towson for a Friday night contest with the next home match coming two days later against Rutgers.
