September 19, 2009 | Field Hockey
HANOVER, N.H. (9/19/09) -- The fourth-ranked Princeton field hockey team used three goals from sophomore Kathleen Sharkey and two from freshman Julia Reinprecht to open the Ivy League season with a convincing 6-1 win at Dartmouth on Saturday afternoon.
Reinprecht gave Princeton a lead with two goals in the first 10 minutes of the game with consecutive unassisted tallies. The first came after dribbling the ball into the circle and the second came on a rebound. Reinprecht now has four goals in her rookie season.
Sharkey made it 3-0 in Princeton's favor in the 11th minute and additional goals from senior Kaitlyn Perrelle and Sharkey gave Princeton a 5-0 lead at the half. Perrelle's goal came off a feed from sophomore Katie Reinprecht and Sharkey's was the result of a tip-in off a pass from Perrelle. Perrelle's goal marked the third straight game in which she has scored a goal.
Dartmouth's Rebecca Sobel scored early in the second half, but Sharkey's third goal of the game and team-leading seventh of the season closed the scoring for Princeton. The goal came off a direct corner with sophomore Alyssa Pyros and freshman Michelle Cesan receiving assists. Sharkey's three-goal effort marked the second time this season she has scored three goals in a game. Her seven goals, four assists and 18 points lead the Tigers in all four categories. Cesan's assist extended her streak of games with a point to four.
Princeton outshot Dartmouth 30-2 and had 18 corners to Dartmouth's two. Junior Jennifer King played a scoreless first half and senior Cynthia Wray made one save in the second half. Dartmouth's Megan Vakiner made 18 saves for the Big Green.
The win was Princeton's fifth in a row to start the season and matches the five-straight games Princeton won to open the 2001 campaign. Princeton's longest season-opening win streak was 11 games and it kicked off the 1998 season. Dartmouth fell to 1-3. Princeton completes the weekend Sunday afternoon at Providence. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
