September 05, 2009 | Field Hockey
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (9/5/09) -- Sophomore Kathleen Sharkey, last year's Ivy League Rookie of the Year, scored three goals, including the game winner in overtime, as the seventh-ranked Princeton field hockey team began 2009 with a 5-4 win over 18th-ranked Ohio State.
Princeton opened the scoring but trailed 3-1 at half time before Sharkey scored twice in the first four minutes of the second half to even the score at 3-3. Ohio State regained a one-goal margin but sophomore Erin Jennings evened the score with four minutes left in regulation to force overtime.
Freshman Julia Reinprecht opened the scoring for the Tigers in 10th minute with her first collegiate goal with an assist going to senior Kaitlin Donovan. Reinprecht would later add an assist and joined Sharkey as the only Tigers with multiple points in the season opener.
Ohio State responded within a minute to even the score and then went ahead in the 22nd minute. Both goals came off direct corners with Jena Cacciatore scoring the first and Aisling Coyle getting the second. Ohio State made the lead 3-1 with two minutes left in the half on a goal from Maria Briones.
Down two at the half, Princeton began chipping away at the lead. Sharkey made it 3-2 seconds into the secon half off an assist from Julia Reinprecht and Princeton drew even at 3-3 four minutes into the second half on Sharkey's second goal of the afternoon. Sharkey's three goals on the afternoon tied her career high, which she set in her second collegiate game last season at Lehigh.
The score remained tied as the game neared the final five minutes until Briones gave Ohio State the 4-3 advantage. Princeton battled back though to even the score with 3:05 left on the clock as Jennings notched her first career goal.
In overtime, Princeton had the only two scoring attempts and won when Sharkey's shot beat Buckeye goalkeeper Ally Tunitis. Sophomore Katie Reinprecht, the reigning Ivy League of the Year, assisted on the goal.
Princeton outshot Ohio State 20-8, but the Buckeyes had a 9-7 advantage on corners. Junior Jennifer King got the win in goal, playing the final half and overtime.
The Tigers are now 1-0 on the young season and will face third-ranked Syracuse tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m.
