Women's Cross Country Finishes 7th at Notre Dame; Banfich Takes 4th

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (10/1/10) - The Princeton women's cross country team finished seventh out of 24 teams in the blue race at the Notre Dame Invitational on Friday, Oct. 1.
Junior Alex Banfich was the top finisher for Princeton placing fourth with a time of 16:29. Senior Sarah Cummings also finished in under 17 minutes, in 16:54, to finish 13th overall, out of 194 runners. Senior Ashley Higginson ran in at 17:06 to take 21st. Sophomore Alexis Mikaelian was 84th at 17:54 and freshman Marisa Cummings was 92nd at 17:59 to round out the Tigers' top five. Princeton had three other runners compete and finish in under 19 minutes. Freshman Theresa Devine and sophomore Abby Levene ran in together at 18:13 and 18:14, respectively and freshman Katie Skinner finished in 18:33.
The Tigers competed against 10 other nationally-ranked teams in the race. The defending national champion Villanova (No. 1) won the race with a low score of 64. Oregon (No. 5) and Florida State (No. 2) finished second and third. New Mexico (No. 12) was fourth followed by a surprise fifth-place finish by Stony Brook. The Seawolves earned their position with the top individual runner in the race Lucy Van Dalen who had a winning time of 16:22. Washington (No. 3) finished just ahead of Princeton in sixth place.
Princeton will get another chance to see where it stands on a national level when it competes at Pre-Nationals on Saturday, Oct. 16 in Terre Haute, Ind. That same day the Tigers will host the Princeton Invitational on its home course West Windsor Fields.
