Volleyball Rebounds With Hard-Fought Sweep At Cornell
October 23, 2010 | Women's Volleyball
Junior Cathryn Quinn recorded 15 kills and six blocks, while sophomore Jennifer Palmquist added 11 kills and six blocks, to lead the Princeton women's volleyball team to a tough 3-0 sweep at Cornell. The win assured the Tigers at least a share of first place in the Ivy League through the first half of the league season.
Despite the 3-0 score, it was anything but easy for the Tigers, who were coming off their first Ivy League loss the night before. A Liz McStravick block and a Michaela Venuti ace broke a 23-all tie in the first game to open the match with a 25-23 win. Princeton fought off a set ball in the second and went into extra points before a Palmquist kill and a Cornell error ended a 29-27 victory for the Tigers. Cornell raced out of the gates in the third and led 17-12 before Princeton made its final push. Princeton won five of the next six points, then ran off four more later in the set to hold a 21-19 lead. Three consecutive kills by McStravick late clinched the win for the Tigers, who will head back on the road next weekend to take on Yale and Brown.
"The team was frustrated last night that we didn't learn from the Harvard match about starting better," said second-year head coach Jolie Ward. "The team worked much harder in the first set tonight and got a tough win.
"Every team in this league is tough," Ward added. "Every win is going to be a challenge. Going 2-0 this weekend would have been great, but any win on the road is a good one. I am hopeful we can carry this momentum into another tough road trip next weekend."
McStravick ended the night with nine kills, six blocks and a .364 attack percentage, while Venuti recorded 38 assists and 13 digs. Freshman outside Sydney Brombal recorded five kills and 21 digs, while sophomore Lydia Rudnick added three kills, 14 digs and three blocks. Both junior Hillary Ford and senior C.C. Lobben added 17 digs apiece.
