ITHACA, N.Y. (10/30/10) - The sixth-ranked Princeton field hockey team clinched at least a share of the 2010 Ivy League title with a 3-2 win at Cornell on Saturday afternoon. Princeton built a 3-0 lead in the win and withstood a late flurry that saw Cornell score twice late.
A pair of first-half goals from Kathleen Sharkey gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead after 35 minutes of play. The first came on a direct corner in the 17th minute with assists from Julia Reinprecht on the insert and Alexandra Douwes on the stop. Eleven minutes later Sharkey made it 2-0 with a shot to the left side of the goal after a push from Douwes on a penalty corner.
Allison Behringer's reverse shot 10 minutes into the second half gave the Tigers a 3-0 lead in the game, but Cornell pressured late, taking advantage of a Princeton yellow card to score twice with an extra player in the closing minutes. Catie De Stio scored a rebound with five minutes remaining and Kate Thompson converted with a minute remaining to move her team within a goal.
Princeton outshot Cornell 15-10 in the game and had eight corners to three for Cornell. Jennifer King made five saves in the Princeton goal while Alex Botte had four for Cornell.
Princeton is now 12-4 overall and 6-0 in the Ivy League. The win earned Princeton at least a share of its sixth straight Ivy League title and its 16th in 17 years. A Princeton win next weekend or a Yale loss would clinch the title outright for the Tigers.
The Tigers complete the regular season next Friday night at home against Penn.
