Volleyball Holds Off Cornell To Maintain Spot In Tight Ivy Race
November 06, 2010 | Women's Volleyball
The Princeton women's volleyball team is fully aware of just how tight the Ivy League race will be for these final two weeks. Playing with tenacity from the start, the Tigers used effective hitting and tough defense to earn a 3-1 victory over Cornell.
The win improves Princeton to 13-8 overall, 8-2 in the Ivy League. The Tigers remain one half game behind first-place Yale, which swept Dartmouth at home Friday night. Princeton shares second place with Penn, which rallied from a 2-1 deficit to knock off Columbia 3-2. Princeton will host the Lions Saturday at 4 and will look to avenge its first Ivy League loss of the season; Columbia fought off a match ball to earn a 17-15 victory in the fifth.
Sophomore Lydia Rudnick led the Tigers with 20 kills, while junior Cathryn Quinn added 14 kills and hit a team-best .345. Sophomore Jennifer Palmquist recorded nine kills and recorded six of Princeton's 16 blocks; Rudnick added five, including two solo blocks, while senior Liz McStravick also added five blocks.
Freshman Sydney Brombal recorded nine kills, three blocks and scored two late points in the second set to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead. Cornell raced out in the third set and held off a Tiger charge to win the third set, but Princeton pulled away midway through the fourth with a 7-2 run. Brombal had two blocks during the run, while Quinn recorded three straight kills. The three-year starter had five of Princeton's last seven points in the victory.
Junior Michaela Venuti paced the offense with 48 assists and added 10 digs, while junior Hillary Ford had a match-high 18 digs.
