Men's Track and Field Wins HYP

PRINCETON, N.J. (2/13/10) - The Princeton men's track team posted a victory at the annual HYP meet held on Saturday, Jan. 13 at Jadwin Gym. The Tigers earned 105 points to defeat Harvard which had 48 points and Yale with 27.
Craig Pearce won the weight throw, on his first time out in the event this season, with a throw of 19.22. His throw was nearly 2 meters further than the second place throw from Ablorde Ashigbi of Harvard who reached 17.23 meters. Joel Karacozoff and Eric Plummer finished third and fourth with marks of 16.84 and 16.77 to give Princeton eight of 11 points in the very first event of the day.
Plummer went on to win the shot put himself with a mark of 17.27 meters. Karacozoff followed in second place with a throw of 16.67 meters, a new personal best by 0.44 of a meter.
Justin Frick took top honors in one event and finished third in two others. He won the high jump, his main event, clearing 2.09 meters. He tried his hand at the long jump for the first time this season and reached 6.72 meters and in the 60-meter hurdles and clocked in at 8.79.
Ian Fox took second to Frick in the high jump with a mark of 2.04 meters.
David Slovenski and Chad Faulkner went 1-2 in the pole vault with Derek Hynes following up with a fourth-place finish. Slovensky cleared 5.05 meters, Faulkner 4.95 and Hynes 4.65.
Peter Callahan and Brian Leung took first and second in the men's mile. Callahan finished in 4:12.60 with Leung checking in at 4:16.20.
Ivan Charbonneau was the only runner to complete the 60-meter dash in less than seven seconds, clocking in at 6.93. He shaved 0.14 seconds off his time from his preliminary run.
The Tigers swept all of the top three slots in the 200 with Adam Hyndman posting a winning time of 23.55. Andrew Usoro followed at 23.70 for second place and Jim Behot at 23.86 for third place.
Kyle Soloff won the 3000, beating out 23 other competitors in one of the most highly participated events of the day, clocking in at 8:24.81.
Also earning first-place finishes were Mike Eddy in the 400 with a time of 48.61, Russell Dinkins in the 800 at 1:52.43 and Adam Thayer in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.58.
Both relay teams also posted victories. The 4x400 of Sebastian Steffen, Ricky Kearney, Dinkins and Eddy finished in 3:17.75 and the 4x800 of Trevor VanAckeren, Michael Palmisano, Nathan Mathabane and Callahan came in at 7:45.54.
