PHILADELPHIA (4/22/10) - Junior Thanithia Billings of the Princeton track & field team won the women's college shot put on opening day of the Penn Relays on Thursday, April 22.
Billings recorded a new personal best with a mark of 15.26 meters (50-0.75) to win the event. She beat out Florida's Fidela James by more than 1.5 inches, hitting the mark on her third throw. The mark was more than 14.5 inches further than her previous best of 14.89 meters. Billings is just the second thrower in Princeton history to reach over 15 meters in the shot put.
Earlier in the day she placed 15th in the college hammer throw at 48.30 (158-5), while sophomore Alyssa Pehmoeller was 21st at 45.30 (148-7). In the championship hammer throw, junior Emma Ruggiero placed fourth with a throw of 55.10 (180-0).
Junior KC Wade was in a 13-way tie for first place in the Eastern high jump, clearing 1.61 meters (5-3.25).
Freshman Tory Worthen cleared 3.95 (12-11.5) to finish in fifth place in the pole vault championship.
The women's 4x100 finished in 47.42 to place 45th out of 95 squads and the 4x400 was sixth in the heptagonal with a time of 3:48.00
Tomorrow, junior Bianca Williams will kick things off at 11 a.m., with the Eastern triple jump.
