Heavyweights Look To Reclaim Historic Childs Cup Saturday
April 07, 2010 | Heavyweight Rowing
The Princeton men's heavyweight crew, ranked seventh in the latest national poll, will head to Orchard Beach, N.Y., this Saturday to take on Penn and Columbia for the oldest trophy in collegiate rowing, The Childs Cup.
Coming off a scrimmage victory over Georgetown last weekend, head coach Greg Hughes and his Tiger heavyweights will jump into Ivy League competition at 8:45 Saturday morning when they take on a pair of Top 20 rivals. Columbia, who stunned Princeton last year by claiming The Childs Cup for the first time since 1963, is currently ranked 13th. Penn, which won this race five straight times between 1989 and 1993, is currently ranked 17th.
Judging from the last times teams had won this race, you can get a sense of how dominant Princeton has been in Childs Cup regattas. Prior to last year's race, Princeton had won 15 straight Childs Cups and has won 41 overall since these three historic programs first raced in 1879.
Princeton did dominate the second varsity and novice eight races last season, winning both by at least 10 seconds. In similar fashion, both the second varsity and novice eight joined the varsity boat as winners last weekend against Georgetown.
This will be the final regatta of the season before Princeton races a program currently ranked above it in the national polls. That stretch will begin next weekend on The Charles River, when Princeton takes on both Harvard and MIT for The Compton Cup.
