PRINCETON (9/10/10) - Kathleen Sharkey's record-setting six-goal performance led the fifth-ranked Princeton field hockey team to a 7-1 win at Richmond on Friday afternoon. Sharkey set Princeton individual game records for goals and points in the win.
Sharkey scored Princeton's first three goals and its last three in leading the Tigers to their second-straight seven-goal performance. Her six goals eclipsed the previous Princeton record of six in a game held by eight other players and most recently achieved in 2008 by Katie Reinprecht, and her 12 points was three more than the previous record of nine held by both Amy MacFarlane and Holly McGarvie.
Additionally she crossed the 100-point plateau for her career and now has 105 to rank fifth-all-time in Princeton field hockey history. Her goal and point totals also ranked in the top 10 in NCAA history for a single game as she recorded the sixth highest total for points in a game and the fifth-highest total for goals. The NCAA records are eight goals and 16 points.
Sharkey opened the scoring in the game's seventh minute converting on a penalty corner after an insert from Alexandra Douwes. She then added goals in the 18th and 20th minutes to extend the Princeton lead with assists from Michelle Cesan and Julia Reinprect. Rachel Neufeld gave the Tigers a 4-0 lead with her first of the season in the 24th minute and Sharkey completed the first half with a goal off a corner with no time remaining on the clock.
Richmond's Christin Hanley put the Spiders on the scoreboard in the second half, but Princeton would add two more goals from Sharkey to complete the 7-1 win. The first came unassisted and the second off a feed from Amy Donovan, which was the first point of her collegiate career.
Christina Maida made three saves for the win as Princeton outshot Richmond 14-6 and doubled up the Spiders in corners 8-4.
Princeton is now 2-0 on the season and returns home to Class of '52 Stadium on Sunday to host Virginia Commonwealth at 12 noon.
