PRINCETON (10/9/11) - Wake Forest's Anna Kozniuk scored her second goal nine minutes into overtime to lift her team to a 3-2 win over the Princeton field hockey team on Sunday afternoon at Class of '52 Stadium. Sydney Kirby and Allison Evans scored for Princeton in the loss.
Princeton scored the first and fourth goals of the game to force overtime, but in between Princeton's two goals, Wake Forest scored twice on penalty strokes. Princeton opened the scoring in the 12th minute when Kirby netted her sixth goal of the season. Rachel Neufeld fed Kirby in the circle and Kirby shot the ball past Wake Forest goalie Kaitlyn Ruhf as she came out of the net to cut the angle.
Jess McFadyen evened the score at 1-1 with three minutes left in the first half when she scored on a stroke. Kari Walkley brought the ball into the circle on a counter and was fouled to draw the stroke and McFadyen scored with a shot to the upper right corner.
The Demon Deacons took advantage of another stroke four minutes into the second half to gain a 2-1 lead. This time Kozniuk took the stroke and scored with a shot to the upper left. The lead only lasted 42 seconds though as Princeton promptly evened the score on a reverse shot from Allison Evans. Her sixth goal of the year came after a Princeton shot was blocked.
Both teams had chances to pull ahead as regulation came to an end. The best chance belonged to Wake Forest as Lizzie Rae had a shot stopped by Princeton goalie Christina Maida and Kaitlin Piosa hit the rebound off the post to keep the score deadlocked.
Wake Forest had the only two shots of overtime as Kozniuk converted on a hard reverse from the top of the circle off the backboard to lift her team to victory.
Wake Forest outshot Princeton 13-9, while the Tigers outcornered Wake 5-2. Maida made eight saves in the Princeton goal while Ruhf made two saves for Wake. Alyssa Pyros had a defensive save for the Tigers.
Princeton falls to 5-6 overall with the loss. The Tigers resume league play next Saturday when they visit Brown.
