Field Hockey Team Blanks Penn to Clinch Seventh Straight Ivy Title
November 05, 2011 | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA (11/4/11) - After a long scoreless deadlock, the Princeton field hockey team scored three goals in the final 17 minutes to earn a 3-0 win on Friday night at Penn and earn at least a share of the 2011 Ivy League Championship. For Princeton, it is the Tigers' seventh straight title, its 20th overall and its 17th in the past 18 seasons.
Amanda Bird scored Princeton's first two goals in the win and now has nine this season after also scoring twice in last weekend's win over Cornell. She broke the stalemate in the 53rd minute when she scored on a penalty corner. Charlotte Krause inserted the ball to Amy Donovan, who passed it across the top of the circle to Bird on the opposite side for the goal. She struck again 13 minutes later this time shooting immediately after the shove from Krause.
Molly Goodman sealed the win with a goal in the final minute. Princeton outshot Penn 18-6 and outcornered the Quakers 18-3. Christina Maida made four saves to earn the shutout in goal, which was the fourth straight shutout by Princeton in the series with Penn. Penn goalie Kieran Sweeney made 10 saves in the loss.
The Tigers are now 9-7 overall and finish the Ivy schedule at 6-1. Princeton dropped its Ivy opener at Dartmouth but won its remaining six league contests. Yale is currently 5-1 in the league and with a win over Brown on Saturday, can share the Ivy title with Princeton.
Regardless of the result of the Yale-Brown game, Princeton has clinched the Ivy League's spot in next Tuesday's NCAA Play-In Game against the champion of the Northeastern Conference by virtue of its win over Yale earlier this season. Rider and Monmouth will play for the NEC Championship on Saturday afternoon. That game will be played on Nov. 8 at 1 p.m.
Tickets for Tuesday's game will cost $5 for adults and $3 for children and students of the participating institutions with a valid student ID. Tickets will be available at the Class of '52 Stadium box office beginning at 12 noon on Tuesday.
