Women's Track & Field Dominates PYP, Wins Nine

PHILADELPHIA (4/9/11) - The Princeton women's track team won the annual PYP Meet with Penn and Yale on Saturday, April 9 at Franklin Field. The Tigers accrued 106 points, with Penn second with 67 and Yale third with 28.
Princeton won nine events, including: steeplechase, 3,000, 800, 400-meter hurdles, 4x400, triple jump, pole vault, hammer throw and shot put.
Junior Alex Banfich won the 3000 with senior Sarah Cummings taking second. Banfich and Cummings ran 9:28.78 and 9:33.86, respectively. Cummings sister, Marisa set a PR in the event, as did freshman Katie Skinner.
Sophomore Mel Newbery won the steeplechase in the first time she's competed in the event this season. She ran 10:40.48. Freshman Clare Gallagher finished third at 11:08.39.
Sophomore Alexis Mikaelian posted a new personal record as she placed second in the 1500. Mikaelian ran 4:21.39, shaving nearly nine seconds off her previous best, while teammate Greta Feldman was third at 4:24.24.
The Tigers earned eight of the 12 possible points in the 800 with four Tigers setting PRs. Freshman Kristin Smoot won the event at 2:09.78. Freshman Molly Higgins was third at 2:10.55, followed by sophomore Melissa Zajdel in fourth at 2:10.73.
Junior Danielle Glaeser placed third in the 400 clocking in at 57.54, while freshman Lily Miller was second in the 200 at 25.36.
In the relays the 4x100 came in second with a season-best time 47.75. Princeton's A team won the 4x400 at 3:48.82 with the B team second at 3:51.52.
Sophomore Joie Hand was the champion in the 400-meter hurdles. She clocked in at 1:03.19 followed by freshman Carrie Vuong at 1:03.30 for second place.
Senior hurdlers Lauren Barber and Bianca Mathabane finished second and third, respectively, in the 100-meter hurdles, with times of 14.63 and 14.93.
Princeton swept the triple jump winning all 12 points. Senior Bianca Williams won the event with a mark of 11.48. Freshman Imani Oliver was second at 11.51, followed by Barber at 11.17 and senior Tiffany Liu at 11.07. Liu was the runner-up in the long jump, reaching 5.32 meters while Miller was third at 5.27.
The Tigers went 1-2-3 in the pole vault to grab 10 of 11 points. Sophomore Tory Worthen captured top honors in the pole vault clearing 3.95 meters. Classmate Lauren Tauscher and freshman Samantha Anderson followed, each clearing 3.65 meters.
Senior KC Wade placed third in the high jump, clearing 1.60 meters.
Senior Thanithia Billings was the champion in the shot put throwing to 15.22 meters. Senior Isabell von Loga was second reaching 13.36 meters. Billings placed second in the discus with a mark of 39.84. Freshman Chelsea Cioffi threw 39.46 for third place. Billings earned another second-place mark in the hammer throw, throwing to 50.37. Classmate Emma Ruggiero did better, throwing to 55.82, to win the event.
Ruggiero capped off her day taking third in the javelin. She landed a mark of 27.86 meters, with von Loga fourth at 27.22.
The track & field team will spread out across the country next weekend, competing in three meets next weekend: Mt. Sac Relays in Walnut, Calif., Tom Jones Invitational in Gainesville, Fla., Moravian Invitational in Bethlehem, Pa.
