PRINCETON (9/15/11) - The Princeton field hockey team kicks off its Ivy League slate as part of a busy weekend that will see it visit Dartmouth and Syracuse for a pair of games. The Tigers open the league schedule on Saturday against the Big Green and visit the fifth-ranked Orange on Sunday.
Princeton is 2-2 overall after two weekends of play. Princeton has started both of its weekends with wins, but has fallen in the second game played. Last weekend Princeton picked up a big win over sixth-ranked Penn State, but couldn't build on that momentum and fell to Richmond three days later.
In the Penn State game, the Tigers fell behind 2-0 in first half, but rallied to draw even late in the first half on consecutive goals from rookie Allison Evans. Princeton then went ahead in the second half on back-to-back goals from sophomore Amanda Bird in the 4-3 win. Three days later, Princeton also found itself playing from behind, but the Tigers were unable to draw even after Richmond opened a two-goal lead in the second half. Evans' late goal brought Princeton within one, but that was as close as the Tigers would get. Junior Charlotte Krause scored the other Princeton goal on a penalty stroke.
Evans leads the Tigers with three goals scored and six points. Krause and Bird each have scored two goals and freshman Sydney Kirby has a team-high four assists, all of which came last weekend.
Saturday marks the opening day of Ivy League competition, as all eight Ivy teams will compete in league games. Princeton opens against Dartmouth for the fourth straight season and has won its last six games against the Big Green. Princeton is 23-6-2 all-time against Dartmouth and leads the series 11-3-1 in Hanover. Last season the Tigers earned a 9-1 win over Dartmouth. Junior Molly Goodman and Bird both scored goals in the win.
Dartmouth is 2-2 as well this season. The Big Green opened with wins over Sacred Heart and Longwood in its opening weekend, but dropped a midweek game to Maine and a game on Sunday to New Hampshire. Kelly Hood leads all Dartmouth players with five goals and 12 points this season.
Princeton concludes the weekend at Syracuse in its third game this season against a Top 10 team. The Tigers dropped the first to 10th-ranked American but then defeated sixth-ranked Penn State. Princeton and Syracuse have met four times over the last three seasons and twice met in the NCAA quarterfinals. Princeton lost the first of those four meetings but has won the last three, including a 1-0 win last September at home on a late goal from Michelle Cesan. Princeton is 11-3 all-time against Syracuse and is 5-1 in the series in Central New York.
Syracuse is 3-2 overall this season with both of its losses coming to teams ranked second in the nation by a single goal. The Orange have wins over Monmouth, 11th-ranked Wake Forest and Ohio State, and losses to North Carolina and Old Dominion. Syracuse split its games last weekend, topping Ohio State but falling to ODU. The Orange opens its Big East slate on Friday against Rutgers before its game with the Tigers on Sunday. Kelsey Millman and Heather Susek lead the way with three goals each for the Orange.
