PRINCETON (9/26/11) - The Princeton field hockey team makes a midweek stop at third-ranked Maryland on Tuesday night. Last season Princeton was the only team to defeat the Terps on their run to the National Championship.
The Tigers are now 3-4 overall and 1-1 in the Ivy League after a win on Saturday over Yale. Princeton never trailed in the game as it built leads of 1-0 and 3-1 before settling for a 3-2 triumph. Sydney Kirby scored Princeton's second and third goals in the win and Allison Behringer netted the Tigers initial score. Allison Evans assisted on both of Kirby's goals. Goalie Christina Maida made four saves.
Kirby and Evans lead the Tigers in scoring this season. Each has scored three goals in their rookie campaigns. Kirby has four assists and 10 points to lead the team, while Evans' two assists and eight points ranks her second. Six Tigers have scored goals this season and eight have recorded at least one point.
Princeton visits Maryland on Tuesday night for its annual mid-week meeting with the Terps. The Tigers snapped a 13-game winless skid against the Terps last season with a 4-2 win at home. The win was Princeton's second ever against a team ranked atop the national polls. Katie Reinprecht, Kathleen Sharkey and Molly Goodman scored in the win.
Maryland leads the all-time series with Princeton 14-5-1 overall and 7-2 in games played in College Park. The Tigers last win at Maryland came in the NCAA Quarterfinals in 1997. Two seasons ago, Princeton took the Terps to overtime in College Park.
Maryland is currently 8-1 overall and 2-0 in the ACC. The only loss for the Terps came at the hand of now top-ranked Old Dominion on Sept. 2. Maryland has won its last six games since, including a 5-0 blanking of Wake Forest on Saturday.
The Tigers return home this weekend for a league contest with Columbia at 12 noon. The game will start a stretch of three straight at home for Princeton, which will host Virginia and Wake Forest in two weekends.
