Women?s Basketball Extends Winning Ways, Defeats Brown 57-45
February 04, 2012 | Women's Basketball
After a three-week break in play, the Princeton women's basketball team returned to action defeating Brown 57-45 Friday evening at Jadwin Gym. The victory marked the Tigers' (14-4 overall, 4-0 Ivy League) seventh straight win, a streak that began on Dec. 19 at Santa Clara.
Early jitters were apparent for the Tigers, as they struggled to find their offensive rhythm. Despite Princeton's slow start, Brown was unable capitalize until Hannah Passafuime scored a trey at 18:02. It would be the only lead the Bears would hold throughout the 40-minute game.
At 17:19, a Lauren Edwards steal near the timeline and quick dish to Kate Miller provided the momentum surge the Tigers needed. Princeton would go on a 12-0 run to take a multi-possession advantage heading into the midpoint of the half.
After nearly a six minute scoring lull from the Bears, Lauren Clarke added a second three-pointer to cut Princeton's double figure lead in half. The Bears would claw their way back and make it a 14-11 contest at the nine-minute mark.
Down the stretch, both sides traded points until Niveen Rasheed put up consecutive jumpers and freshman Blake Dietrick slammed in a three-pointer from the corner with under a minute remaining to send the Tigers into the break holding a 30-18 lead.
In the second half, Rasheed added 10 points to help preserve the Tigers' double figure lead for the remainder of the game. Brown would get as close as seven, 32-35, at 16:41, but Princeton responded with a 6-0 run to prevent a second half Bear rally.
Rasheed went on to score 19 points to lead both sides and bring her career total to 950 points. Both Edwards and Rasheed grabbed eight boards in the game, while Miller added 10 points and seven rebounds in 26 minutes of work.
For Brown (11-8 overall, 2-3 Ivy League), Passafuime led with 10 points, going 2-for-4 from beyond the arc.
"It comes down to we didn't take shots we should have and we took shots we shouldn't have. I thought it was a pretty subpar effort and it was disappointing for a team like us. I hope we are better than that or we won't get to where we want to be," said head coach Courtney Banghart.
The Tigers will face Yale tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 4 at 6 p.m. in Jadwin Gym. The Bulldogs (12-7 overall, 4-1 Ivy League) are coming off a 72-60 victory
