WEEK 10 GAME NOTES (PDF)
The Week That Was
Princeton split a pair of games against Harvard and No. 4 UConn last weekend. Improving to 4-1 in Ivy League play, the Tigers tripped up the Crimson, 1-0, scoring the game's only goal in the 31st minute. Holding leads of 1-0 and 2-1, Princeton found itself locked in a 3-3 tie with less than 20 minutes to play against defending national champion UConn before ultimately falling short, 4-3.
You're Invited
Sydney Kirby has been selected to play in the 2014 Victory Sports Tours/NFHCA Division I Senior Game scheduled for 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 22 at the University of Maryland. Dishing out a pair of assists against UConn, Kirby is currently tied for the team lead in points (14) with five goals and four helpers. One of four Ivy League student-athletes to be invited, she joins Penn's Emily Corcoran, Dartmouth's Ali Savage and Columbia's Lauren Skudalski. In 67 career appearances, Kirby has amassed 25 goals and 19 assists.
Honor Roll
With three points on the week, Cat Caro was named to the Ivy League's weekly honor roll. Breaking a scoreless deadlock in the 31st minute against Harvard, Caro recorded her second game winner of the season. Against UConn, the sophomore standout assisted on Maddie Copeland's goal at the tailend of the first half that gave the Tigers a 2-1 lead heading into the intermission. Starting all 15 of the team's games this season she has posted 11 points (4G, 3A).
Reaching a Milestone
Kristen Holmes-Winn picked up her 150th career victory with a 1-0 triumph over Harvard. She is now second only to Beth Bozman (188) on the school's all-time charts. The Tigers have posted double-digit wins in all but two of her 12 seasons, including a program-record 21 victories during the team's 2012 national championship run. Going 77-5 against the Ivy League, Holmes-Winn has helped guide Princeton to 10 conference titles.
Team Effort
Nearly knocking off UConn, Princeton held leads of 1-0 and 2-1 with five different players recording a point in a 4-3 loss. Hailey Reeves opened the scoring at 29:29 with just her second career goal. After the Huskies tied it in the 31st minute, Maddie Copeland registered her team-high seventh goal of the year to put Princeton back on top. Playing in just her second game since returning from injury, Teresa Benvenuti accounted for the Orange and Black's other score at 45:35. Sydney Kirby finished with two assists.
Within Reach
Allison Evans is seven points shy of becoming the ninth player in program history to reach the 100-point plateau. Upping her career mark to 93, she is ninth on the school's scoring list. In four seasons in Orange and Black, Evans has amassed 38 goals and 17 assists. Her combined 55 goals and assists currently rank 10th all-time.
In the Hunt
Despite seeing its 22-game conference win streak come to an end with a 3-2 loss to Columbia on Oct. 3, Princeton remains in the hunt for a 23rd Ivy League title. With a 4-1 mark against Ivy opponents, the Tigers are currently tied with Columbia and Cornell atop the league standings. The Tigers are 77-5 against the Ivy League under Kristen Holmes-Winn, with its only losses coming to Dartmouth (2004, 2011), Cornell (2007), Penn (2004) and Columbia (2014).
Close Calls
Princeton has faced seven opponents currently ranked in the NFHCA top-20 poll. Of those seven games, three have been decided by just one goal. Other than an 8-1 loss to Maryland, Princeton has held a lead or been within a goal during the second half of every other match-up against a ranked team. Going 1-9 against a particularly grueling non-conference slate, Princeton's non-Ivy competitors boast an impressive 119-46 (0.721) mark.
Series History
Princeton holds a 28-5-3 edge over Cornell in the all-time series with a 13-3-2 mark on the road. Taking the inaugural meeting in 1978 (4-0), the Tigers emerged victorious in each of the first five match-ups between the rivals. The Big Red won consecutive games in 1983 and 1984 before the programs battled to a tie the next two seasons.
After going 3-2-1 from 1987-92, Princeton won 14 in a row from 1993-2006. Cornell put the brakes on the Tigers' run in 2007 (4-3), but the Orange and Black have responded with six-straight, outscoring the Big Red 32-4 over that span with a 9-0 margin over the last two seasons.
When Last We Met
Princeton cruised to a 4-0 victory over Cornell in last year's showdown on Bedford Field. Cat Caro opened the scoring in the 22nd minute before Sydney Kirby assisted on the team's second tally at 44:10. Less than four minutes later, the Tigers made it 3-0 before Allison Evans notched the Orange and Black's final goal at 60:46. Princeton finished with a decisive 26-6 shot advantage and a 8-4 edge in penalty corners. Anya Gersoff made four saves in a shutout win.
Scouting Cornell
Winning eight of its first nine to open the season, Cornell dropped thee consecutive games to American, Syracuse and Harvard from Oct. 5-18. Righting the ship, the Big Red got back on track last weekend with victories over Brown (3-0) and Maine (3-2). Cornell now stands just one win shy of tying a program record (11) set during the 2008 and 2010 campaigns.
Marisa Siergiej currently leads the team with 13 goals this season. With another score, Siergiej would tie Cornell's single-season mark of 14 held by Hannah Balleza (2012), Kelley Boutin (1999) and Linda Miller (1982). Dishing out a pair of assists last weekend, Taylor Standiford is currently tied with Cari Hills' for the team's single-season record (11). Two-time Ivy League Rookie of the Week Krysten Mayers is second on the team in points (17) and goals (8).
Playing behind a solid backline that is surrendering just 3.3 penalty corners per game, Kelly Johnson has seen the majority of time in net, going 7-2 in nine appearances with a 1.04 goals-against average and 0.735 save percentage. Seeing action in seven games, Elizabeth Schaeffler has logged 388:47 minutes in net with a 1.62 GAA and 0.550 save percentage.
