Despite Late Rally, Volleyball Falls Out Of Ivy Race With 3-1 Yale Loss

BOX SCORE
The Princeton women's volleyball team knew its dreams for an Ivy League championship were slim Friday night, but that never showed in the effort on the second-to-last night of the 2014 season. The Tigers battled toe-to-toe with the reigning Ivy champion Yale Bulldogs in New Haven, but a late rally wasn't enough in a 3-1 loss.
That result, combined with Harvard's 3-0 home win over Columbia Friday, means that the Ivy League title won't be determined until the final day. Both Yale and Harvard are 11-2 on the season; the Bulldogs will host Penn, while Harvard hosts Cornell.
Princeton will compete for sole possession of third place in the league Saturday at 5 pm against Brown, which fought off three match points in a 3-2 home win over Penn Friday. Brown has been on both sides of that result this season; Princeton fought off three match balls in Dillon Gym before pulling out a 21-19 fifth-set win over the Bears.
Both Kendall Peterkin and Kelly Matthews had a team-best 11 kills, while Cara Mattaliano added 10 kills and 23 digs. Senior middle Nicole Kincade had nine kills and five blocks, while Brittany Ptak added eight kills.
Lauren Miller had 44 assists and 13 digs for Princeton, while junior libero Sarah Daschbach led Princeton with 26 digs.
Yale won the opening two sets and was even at 24-24 in the third, but a service error and a block by Kincade and Miller gave Princeton the win. The Tigers rallied from 20-15 down in the fourth to get within two, but the Bulldogs would maintain the lead throughout for the win.
Peterkin's 11 kills moved her into elite territory in Orange and Black; she is only the ninth Princeton player to record more than 400 kills in a single season. She will enter the season finale with 407 kills; she could move into the Top 5 with a 25-kill night at Brown.
