The Princeton women's hockey team did at least one thing right in the first period against RIT Friday afternoon. It left itself plenty of time to come back.
Princeton spotted RIT three goals in the first 12 minutes, rallied to tie it early in the third period and then won it when sophomore Morgan Sly scored her first career goal 1:36 into overtime to give the Tigers - the ones from Princeton - a 4-3 victory at Baker Rink.
"We weren't focused, so we slugged our way through 20 minutes," Princeton head coach Jeff Kampersal said after the game regarding his team's play the first period. "Then we started to play the way we are capable of playing. Once we had a little bit more toughness and faster skating we were able to establish a forecheck and get shots on goal. We competed hard and won battles, adjusted a little bit on the power play and it was just way more competitive level the last two periods."
The win improved Princeton to 4-1 on the young season, while the other Tigers - the ones from RIT - fell to 5-4-2. The teams meet again Saturday afternoon at 3, again in the first game of a Baker Rink doubleheader, one that concludes with the men's game against Colgate at 7.
One week earlier, Princeton built a big early lead and then hung on for a 5-4 win at Cornell. This time would be the opposite story.
The game featured seven combined goals by seven different players, the first three by RIT in the first 12:04 of the first period. From that point, Princeton would shut RIT out for the final 49:32, including a 41:36, no goals-against performance from Alysia DaSilva to finish the game.
It would be until the second period before Princeton got on the board, when Fiona McKenna scored from Molly Contini and Hillary Lloyd 3:06 after the first intermission. Lloyd, hwo had a three-point day, made it 3-2 less than a minute before the end of the period, assists to Audrey Potts and Brianna Leahy.
The tying goal came from Ali Pankowski, with assists against from Contini and Lloyd, and it was a 3-3 game with 17:34 to go.
Neither team would score the rest of the way, but Princeton would get a power play with 17 seconds left in regulation that would carry over into the OT. Sly ended it when she skated to her right and lifted one over the right shoulder of RIT's Brooke Stoddart, who had made 30 saves to that point.
