PRINCETON, N.J. - Despite finishing with a 10-7 shot advantage and a 5-3 edge in penalty corners, the 14th-ranked Princeton University field hockey team fell to 0-4 on the season with a hard-fought 1-0 overtime loss to Bucknell University on Bedford Field.
Scoreless at the end of regulation, Bison senior midfielder Amie Pritchard broke the deadlock just 2:15 into the extra session, ripping a hard shot from the top of the circle into the bottom left corner of the Tiger cage. Picking up its first-ever win over Princeton, Bucknell (4-1) extended its win streak to four games.
With neither team able to gain any traction offensively over the first 35 minutes, the Tigers won three consecutive penalty corners to open the second half. Teresa Benvenuti and Danielle Duseau put a pair of tries on target, but Bucknell junior goalie Shannon Keen turned away both attempts to keep the home team off the board.
Continuing to apply pressure, Cat Caro tested Keen with another shot at 41:07 before Benvenuti ripped a hard try that forced the netminder to make kick save at 44:15. Once again pushing forward in the 49th minute, Princeton freshman striker Ryan McCarthy tracked down a through-ball to the right of the Bucknell goal. Playing it into the circle, McCarthy centered a pass to Maddie Copeland in front, but the junior's shot veered just wide of the near post.
Moving into the attacking third in the 54th minute, Bucknell's Kayla Sullivan recorded the Bison's first shot of the frame at 53:06, prompting an Anya Gersoff save. Moments later, Bucknell earned a penalty corner, but the Princeton defense blocked down a Liz Wills shot before it could threaten the Tiger cage.
With the teams combining for just one other shot over the final 16:02 of regulation, the game headed into overtime. Gaining possession early in the frame, Bucknell's Kelsey Mucelli handled the ball on the left side of the field. Receiving a long pass from Mucelli just before reaching the right side of the circle, Pritchard took a quick touch before firing a low tracer into the back of the Princeton net at 72:15.
Duseau and Benvenuti each put a pair of shots on goal for the Tigers, while Gersoff finished with a pair of stops. Keen had seven saves in the win, keeping a Bison offense that managed just three shots on goal level with the Princeton attack before Pritchard's overtime winner.
The Orange and Black return to action on Saturday, Sept. 20 against Dartmouth College.
